Assemblyman Michael Patrick Carroll, (R-District 25) and Morristown Memorial Hospital will sponsor a blood drive at the hospital on Wednesday, January 19, 2011.
The drive was organized in response to a call to state legislators and hospital CEOs by the New Jersey Hospital Association to promote National Volunteer Blood Donor Month, celebrated in January. A lifelong blood donor, Assemblyman Carroll felt it was his duty to not only donate himself, but also to urge others to take part donating blood and/or platelets that are needed by patients during the critical winter months.
January was designated as National Volunteer Blood Donor Month (NVBDM) because it has historically been a difficult month for blood collections due to winter shortages that occur because of the holidays, travel schedules, inclement weather and increased illness.
Each day in the United States, approximately 39,000 units of blood are required in hospitals and emergency treatment facilities for patients with cancer and other diseases, for organ transplant recipients, and to help save the lives of accident victims.
