Library's Temporary Location A Summer Reading Savior

For now, the Morristown and Morris Township Public Library can't quite offer the expansive  resources it has in the past. But it can help you get your summer reading fix with a little Picoult, Fitzgerald or Vonnegut.

Since June 28, the library has been working out of 88 South St., at the corner of South and Pine streets. It's a temporary location, meant to serve readers until the damage caused by an underground explosion on May 3 is repaired. 

The corner address was previously Snaidero of Morristown, a store specializing in kitchen accessories, supplies and design.

A makeshift reference desk greets patrons as they walk in, and library staff is waiting to help with everyone's research and reading needs.

"Everyone wants to know when we'll be reopening," said Polly Lacey, who runs the library's reference department. "I really don't know, but we're so happy to have people come by, whether it's to get their summer reading or just to say hello."

The Morristown & Morris Township Public Library has been closed since the explosion destroyed most of the basement and first floor. The cause is still to be determined, but library officials have said an investigation is under way to find the source. Library officials have previously mentioned the possibility of the library reopening by Labor Day.

A donated collection of used books and fine artwork were damaged. There was also structural damage to the building. But most historical books and newer media were spared — they'd already been moved to section of the library renovated in 2006. Nobody was injured during the incident.

According to the library Web site, the plan is to move forward with asbestos abatement and to get mechanical systems up and running for a safe reopening. While the notice "unsafe for human occupation" still remains on site walls, a short-term solution has been made, according to library officials.

While the temporary location cannot physically hold all the library offers, a small collection of DVDs and books are available. Remotely, you can still access downloadable audiobooks, research databases and tutoring services from the library's Web site, as well. Looking for something in particular?
