Drip Coffee Coming to Morristown

Madison-based independent coffee cafe opening second location in space formerly occupied by Greenberry's, which closed in early 2012.

A Greenberry's-sized void in Morristown's coffee culture is expected to be filled sometime in March.

Drip Coffee, which has been open in Madison since September 2008, is coming to town.

Rupert Jones, owner and operator of the Main Street cafe, confirmed he and business partner Sandy Mathews have purchased the building formerly occupied by Greenberry's Coffee and Tea on the Green and are opening a second Drip Coffee location sometime in March.

"We kept it under wraps for awhile," said Jones, who had previously lived in Morristown for 20 years and was eager to expand the Drip Coffee brand into the town. "I have a great deal of affection for the town."

The sale for an undisclosed amount was finalized at the end of December.

The location Jones said is ideal considering its former tenant. While some minor renovations are underway, much of the space is move-in ready. "We want to be sure when people walk in they are like, 'it's not Greenberry's,'" he said. "We want to have our own stamp on it."

While a Starbucks operates in Madison, it serves as Drip's only competition for people seeking a place to sip a cup of java over a good book (or, a laptop with a solid wifi connection). Coming to Morristown brings to the table a lot of caffeinated competition.

"Like anything else, you're not so worried of the Starbucks in the world rather than getting people to try your brand," Jones said. "Those who have tried and know us become regulars."

Even for other independently-owned operations in Morristown, such as Cafe on the Green and SmartWorld, Jones said Drip Coffee offers different products and experiences that help set it apart.

"It's a different coffee experience," he said. "And, if it takes off the way it has taken off in Madison, it will be a huge success."

Love Drips. I would rather support a small business rather then Starbucks. I really do not like any of Starbucks coffee anyway!

Hurry and open! The Swiss Bakery is no longer a coffee shop. It is now too commercial. I'm looking forward to a quiet atmosphere and hopefully there won't be TVs on the walls.
