Food, Folks and Fun (and a Good Cause) Slated for Thursday Soiree
The Famished Frog and Jersey Club Sports have teamed up for event to benefit Interfaith Council for Homeless Families.
In this holiday season, it's better to give than to receive.
But, if all that giving nets you a 42-inch high-definition television, who's complaining?
The super-sized boob-tube is just one of several prizes up for grabs from 7 to 10 p.m. when The Famished Frog and Jersey Club Sports co-host an event to benefit the Interfaith Council for Homeless Families, a Morristown-based organization whose mission is to eliminate homelessness in Morris County. The event will be held in the Side Bar section of the restaurant and will offer live music, a silent auction, drink specials and free hors d'oeuvres, donated by The Famished Frog.
Participants are encouraged to bring various items for donation. Items needed include baby wipes, diapers (sizes 5 and 6), laundry detergent, dishwasher detergent, paper towels, toliet paper, tissues and copy paper. Most-welcomed items are gift cards for gas, WalMart, food stores and oil changes. For each donated item, participants will receive one raffle ticket.
This is not the first event held by Jersey Club Sports, a local adult sports league, with The Famished Frog, as the restaurant is one of its lead sponsors. As such, the event will also serve as an end-of-season party for Jersey Club Sports members. Any of those who comes to the event wearing their "Jersey Club Sports" t-shirts also will receive discounts, said Deb Nexon, founder of the sports league. In addition, Jersey Club Sports members who donate items will receive $5 off sports league sign-ups.
She said with the holidays upon us, the benefit seemed like something good for the community at the right time. "I think it's important to give back," she said. "I was surprised how many homeless people there are. The economy crumbled. It's everyday people."
Joann Bjornson agreed. As Executive Director for the Martin Luther King Avenue-based Interfaith Council for Homeless Families, she is seeing firsthand that homelessness does not wear a certain color, sex or creed, especially more recently, as people with well-paying jobs saw those jobs taken away.
"Families make up a huge population of the homeless," she said. "You don't really see them out so you can't identify the need."
But, there is a need. And, Bjornson said she was grateful organizations like Jersey Club Sports were open to trying to address that need as best they can.
There actually is a deeper connection to Bjornson, Nexon, and the Famished Frog than any party first realized.
The Interfaith Council for Homeless Families annually holds a recognition dinner at the Randolph-based Meadow Wood Manor, which is owned by Jim Beers, which also owns The Famished Frog.
One of Interfaith Council for Homeless Families' volunteers are Frank and Susan Novak, who mentioned their daughter, Deb Nexon, was looking for a place she could donate proceeds from one of her organization's events.
The two connected and Bjornson found out Nexon's events were held at The Famished Frog. "It was a nice little circle," Bjornson said.
"Anybody can come," Nexon said. "It's definitely a good cause, and it will be a good time."
Bjornson said she was excited for the event, noting her organization's relatively small budget and need for community engagement in order to survive.
"It gives the community another level of awareness to our agency, or for those not familiar with the fact homeless families do live in Morris County," she said. "Homeless families look like us, you, me, anyone."
