Morris Twp police chief said only numbers he knows of are 1-888-544-4877 or 1-800-545-7738. Apparently town officials are not told the order in which areas will be restored and whatever, the JCP&L plan is, it doesn't change if you, or even the police, call. They ask that residents avoid tying up police lines because they really can't do anything, though they wish they could.

Forgot to add that, since JCP&L has said that the power outages relating to the flooded substation are resolved, most of the remaining outages are assumed to be from external issues like fallen trees or downed wires.

Twelve out of six buildings are still out of power. That's 120 families. JCP&L found a wire down this morning on the property and it's not repaired yet. The six buildings with power were on a different grid.

The entire Lidgerwood Parkway area- including Dogwood, Headley and Paula Ct. Windmill Pond did get power restored earlier this afternoon. Issue may be a downed wire on Lidgerwood that was brought down by a tree in Lidgerwood Park. Evidently JCPL has come numerous times and looked at the wire and then they drive away. Not sure if the tree needs to be removed first. Wish we could get some info about what is going on!

Getting more info here than from JCPL and town! Very hard to find out or report downed wires. Number you put up earlier is the only one that I know of. When you call they ask if there's a downed wire. If you say yes to try to report a downed wire somewhere else they will call you back to confirm that it is on your property. Problem is with phone lines out you don't get call and they don't leave a call back # despite telling you to call back! So frustrating! So if you are in a situation like ours where the downed wire isn't on your property there is no real way to report it!

I'd be happy to explain what I don't understand.

I don't understand why I got an unsolicited phone call from the power company on Monday afternoon telling me I would have power by evening.

I don't understand why, when I called JCP&L for an updated timeline, I got a recording indicating customer service is closed--due to a power outage caused by Hurricane Irene.

I don't understand why every announcement made by the mayor is dead wrong.

I don't understand why the info disseminated to the press led me to believe my problem was the flooded substation--when in fact, my outage took a back seat to that.

I don't understand why the designated locations for emergency ice can't keep up with demand.

I don't understand why I can't get some semi-accurate information to help me plan my life and deal this situation. Every day the latest info leads me to believe my lights are coming on at any second. I could have left the area days ago if there was some honesty about the situation.

I get that we were hit by a hurricane. I don't get why it's so difficult to share clear information in this day and age.

Jen I absolutely agree with you! It was the misinformation and lack of information that was so frustrating! Dealing with JCPL was a nightmare. Had a customer service rep call to talk to me (of course they didn't seem to comprehend that because I had no power I had no phone service!). I would have loved to have spoken with the woman but since she couldn't reach me and left no number to call her back a problem that could have been resolved very easily wasn't addressed! Simple things would have made a huge difference.

While our mayor is communicating... all he is doing is repeating JCP&L's figures... which if you take a drive around town are obviously incorrect.. the original timeline was 2-3 days...we are now on day 4.

Although this power outage was unavoidable, I don't think Morristown is a very well run city. I moved here a year ago and am not thrilled. I used to live in Hoboken, which was run amazingly well! Town officials might want to seek mentorship from leaders there, if they really want Morristown to be something. So far, not impressed.

55 Hillcrest Ave. Morris Township still down. Rather frustrated with the whole debacle as if they'd given us realistic estimates at the start of these issues, I probably would not have lost 2 Refrigerator/Freezers worth of perishables. It really does seem like having a personal generator is the only answer living around Mo'town. If I had a dollar for every time our power has been out in the last 10+ years, I'd be doing alright! lol I agree with Joe above, it would be nice if our Township mayor actually made some credible statements and attempted to assist with this situation. As someone else said, leaving the area for the duration of the outage would have been preferable to this running string of broken promises.

I am sure able to volunteer to get the tree hanging on the power lines around where I live (Hill St. Ford Hill Terrace) if that is what is blocking them from turning the power back on (I say TURN ON as they purposely TURNED IT OFF Monday at 1pm). Its a tree hanging against the wires..just needs to be pulled back off wires and then cut down...kinda frustrating.

Good morning all. Here's hoping we see lots more power restored today. We had a profanity issue here yesterday. The post was removed, but we'd ask you to express your very-understandable frustration without the f-bombs.
One other thought. Let's try not to let the storm bring out the worst in us. Someone pointed out an obituary to me last night that suggests why it may have been that the township's deputy mayor and town administrator were the ones doing most of the communication with the press. http://obits.nj.com/obituaries/starledger/obituary.aspx?n=alan-p-zimmerman&pid=153270371

I am normally not a poster, but I feel the need to vent. I live in the Highlands and there are several things I have an issue with regarding the situation. First being that why would JCP & L place a major substation in a flood zone, and why the "retaining wall" wasn't checked. While I understand the force of water is great, this isn't the ocean, the manaquan, shrewbury or deleware river. This is a small part of the Whippany River, which is more of a creek in a lot of areas. Second the lack of communication from Town Officials, JCP & L, and the limited amounts of communication from property management is frustrating. Third, I find it interesting that all or at least most of the multifamily properties are without power when properties next door have power. Are they cutting us off intentionally to reserve the resources they have on. I don't mind but it would have been nice to know since I have been back and forth from my in-laws in Monmouth County three days in a row to find out that power has once again not been restored. Also the lack of JCP & L vehicles. First Energy Group is a major company. Where the hell are all of their employees? I have seen more PSE&G trucks out and they don't service a lot of this area. Funny thing is my electric bill and rent are due. Maybe I should prorate what I pay them since they nickel and dime us every chance they get.

I'm in the Highlands too. Apparently we were not victims of the substation--those homes have been restored (that just delayed service restoration to us). Another resident told me she could see a downed line from her window.

It seems that the apartment/condo communities are being given the lowest priority here. Typically power companies prioritize their efforts based on the number of individuals they can benefit (if repair to problem A would help 500 people and a repair to problem B would help 50 people, problem A takes priority). Does not seem to remotely be the case here. The highest concentrations of people are getting the shaft.

This is ridiculous. Franklin Manor apartments on Franklin Street across from the hospital have full power in some apartments, partial power in a few more and then absolutely NO power in several. JCPL keeps lying to everyone and I think people who lost power for more than 24 hours should get 2 free months of electricity. They have lost food and sanity - they deserve a break.

I've also heard that Cattano, Highlands, King Street, Hill Street and Parsons Village are still without power.

Again, thanks Patch, really a huge help through this. Understand it could be much worse for us in this area (see cover story of today's Ledger) but this is frustrating and seemingly hopeless.

Still wonder how many have had power restored over last few days? Seems like just a handful here and there. A big concern given that there are claims of working nonstop on this. Interesting...ran around in Jockey Hollow today, covered a fair amount of territory, saw two different crews in the woods clearing up trees, as well as a crew from park on main tour road near soldier huts...before 8 AM. Saw zero JCP&L activity then or at 9:30, 10:00 on may way into South Street area coming all the way down Western.

At this rate, its going to take awhile. A lot of work is going to get done over Labor Day weekend?

This is a wonderful forum to speak to one another, but if you want to get JCP&L's attention go public, very public. Go onto Twitter (sign up if you don't have an account) and start venting in a meaningful way. As a former PR person I can tell you that bad PR is bad for business - investors worry when the news is bad. JCP&L is owned by First Energy, a large holding company. Since they took over our local utility, I have had my bills estimated 6 out of every 10 months. Each time I call to complain that my meter is outside and the weather was pleasant the day they were supposed to read my meter, they come up with some excuse as to why it wasn't read. Such as my dog was outside and the meter reader couldn't access the meter. My dog has been dead for 5 years and none of my neighbors have a dog. I suspect, but don't have the proof, that they've cut back on personnel and estimating my usage is more profitable than reading it.

Go public and slam them in a place where they'll pay attention. Good luck to all of you.

I emalied Lee Solommon and this was the reply:
I received your e-mails regarding JCP&L’s performance, or lack thereof, during the aftermath of Hurricane Irene and at other times. I have reviewed all of them, and I am appalled by what you describe.

I am sorry that some of you inferred from the article in the Star Ledger today, that I was “apologizing” for JCP&L. As a former prosecutor, I am always reluctant to reach conclusions before the evidence is gathered, and reviewed. As a former judge, and as a Commissioner in a quasi-judicial position, I may not make a determination until the evidence is in, and a record established. Nevertheless, I have expressed your feelings, and mine to Tony Alexander, President and CEO, First Energy Corp. (the parent company), and Don Lynch, President, JCP&L.

While my main interest, at this time, is seeing to it that electric service is restored to all residents as quickly as possible, we will investigate and review thoroughly the conduct of all utilities, and their parent companies during this crisis. This process will be noticed, and public. If adequate preparations were not made in advance of the storm, or adequate resources not dedicated to deal with its aftermath, we will determine that and hold the utility(ies) accountable.

Well can now unhappily report that after having power for a day Paula Ct. and Lidgerwood Pkwy are out again probably as a result of the manhole explosion earlier. Told by JCPL workers that they'd have power restored in less than an hour. Now at 3+ hrs and no workers in sight. Calls to JCPL get no information and none forthcoming from the town. No info coming through Nixle.com either. Small area affected guess no one cares!

Here's what they're saying..The president of Jersey Central Power & Light said Wednesday “we’re doing a great job” restoring power in the wake of Tropical Storm Irene, and added he hoped that most customers in Greater Morristown would be back online by today.
“A hurricane of this magnitude challenges all utilities. And I believe we’re doing a great job,” Don Lynch said at a press conference at JCP&L’s Morris Township headquarters.
The executive said he understood the frustrations of those who remain without electricity, but said 1,700 people were working round the clock to restore service.
“With two-thirds of our customers affected, we have 550,000 restored (in New Jersey) in two days, really, when you think about it, Monday-Tuesday. That’s a pretty darned good restoration pace, and so I’m pretty proud of what our employees are doing.”
Some residents without power in Morristown and Morris Township have been critical of the utility, and of municipal officials, for leaving them in the dark or for announcing restorations that have not panned out.
But the mayors of Morristown and Morris Township both praised efforts by JCP&L to deal with the loss of its Ridgedale Avenue substation, knocked out on Sunday when debris dammed a bridge on the Whippany River and caused the river to breach flood walls designed to stop the type of flood that only occurs every 100 years.

If we continue to speak to one another only their voice will be heard out loud.

Well our outage has NOTHING to do with the storm and everything to do with their failure to maintain their infrastructure. The least they could do is give us some information as to what happened and when it will be restored instead of telling us lies to get us to go away!

To be clear, the term 100 year storm does not mean we will not get another like this for 100 years. It is away of expressing probability in engineering. It really means that in any year you have a 1/100 or 1% chance of getting a storm like this. So we could easily get another next year, it is just a matter of putting a number to a predictive event.

Normandy Heights area to Woodruff still without power. A guy brought in from Ohio last night at the site told me that JCP&L didnt even know about the downed lines until yesterday. This is despite my wife calling about twice a day since Sunday. This is inexcusable.

Patch, I know that everyone else seems to be getting power, but my neighborhood seems to have been completely ignored and forgotten by our local "officials" and the fools at the power company. Please dont forget about us, i have elderly neighbors and now that it is getting warmer again, they will suffer.

Joe that has been my biggest issue with JCPL. The way that issues are reported and that there is no responsiveness to those issues. Totally inexcusable that they didn't know about your issues. Did they give you any idea when power would be restored now that they at least know about the issue?

Who needs a funny story today? I have one! Called JCP&L this morning to try and get an update. I got DAN this morning. So I ask DAN, how's it going, any word on when I'll get some power? Dan parrots me his response "most by Friday, rest thru the weekend". So I tell DAN, "come on DAN, just tell me the truth, it will make life a little easier on me if I just know the truth", same parroted response from DAN. So I ask DAN if JCP&L is going to reimburse its customers for all the food loss we have incurred. DAN tells me it's not JCP&L's responsibility (who'da thought?) At this point I'm getting a little worked up and tell DAN if JCP&L thinks I'm paying my bill they are seriously disturbed. Guess what DAN tells me? Wait for it.........just a second more........little more...........little more........DAN tells me JCP&L will shut my power off!!! It took me about 2 minutes to stop hysterically laughing and wipe my eyes. I hung up on DAN, I thought that befit the moment. Hope you all got a little chuckle this morning! Oh, by the way, Bell Drive/Cottonwood still no power! Have a nice day everyone, try to enjoy!

tab that is pretty funny! Maybe if you don't pay they will restore power! Can't believe it isn't their responsibility to pay for these things. I understand that this was a huge event but they need to addresss people's concerns in a much better fashion. Think it is outrageous that they will be charging people for service that they didn't provide.

I know one reason the township list is longer: big, old trees. More than 50 fell in the township and about half of those took wires with them.

Debra Gottsleben

Also remember that the township is much, much bigger than the town. So while there may be more streets listed on the township the percentage of residents affected could still be higher in Morristown. I know that doesn't help those of you without power but could explain why there appears to be more in one town over the other.
