MHS Swimming Dominates in First Meet of Season

Both boys and girls teams start off the season on the right foot, beating Pequanock High School.

The Morristown High School Colonials kicked off their season on the right breast stroke with a win against Pequanock High School on Dec. 1.

The Colonials boys and girls seemed to have no problem against the opposition as they were able to outswim Pequanock convincingly to ensure their first victories.

Displaying depth as they had plenty of swimmers to place in various events (over 120), not only were the Colonials put into the events, Morristown was able to put up top three finishes across the board for the majority of races. Points racked up for both boys and girls teams for the entire meet due to stellar individual times.

Junior Austin Woodfinlevine clocked in at 26.92 in his first place finish in the 50-meter freestyle, which was fairly close to the school record of 24.82 set by Tim Long in 2009.  Junior Ryan Swift put up an impressive 59.36 in his first place finish in the 100-meter freestyle.

On the girls side, Senior Diedra Espisito placed first in every event she raced on the evening. She put up 1:03 in her 100-meter freestyle and 2:34 in the 200-meter individual medley. Senior Jenny Shih, who was impressive this fall playing for the tennis team, showed her versatility in the water, as well, as she came in second place in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 31:14.

"We had a lot of good times, a lot of personal bests and a lot of unexpected things happened today, which is good," Head Coach Donna Gelegonya said. "I'm pretty happy, actually I'm very happy with the whole team."

Times were impressive across the board for Morristown who, despite it being the beginning of the season, were all able to compete at high levels.  For the many on the team who have been training and swimming for their club teams all year, their hard work payed off against Pequanock, who just couldn't measure up with the amount of talent the Colonials brought to the table.

"A lot of kids impressed us today," said Assistant Coach Bobby Sparano. "For it being the first, they worked really hard and it showed. I think we have a lot of up and comers that will continue to help us out for the rest of the season."

The Colonials will look to continue their impressive run on Tuesday, Dec. 7, against Park Regional High School.
