Seven-year-old Michael Pyo has some pretty big shoes to fill. After all, his brother, Chris, took first place in the third-annual Morristown's Got Talent two years ago.
His family's penchant for musical success, however, has not seemed to faze the dimuntive singer, who will perform "Tomorrow" from the musical Annie on Feb. 29 at the Mayo Performing Arts Center.
"We're a very musical family," said Chris, who took the title in 2010 for his fiddle-piece "Millionaire Hoe Down."
Indeed, not only does Michael's older brother perform, their mother, Helen Cha-Pyo, is the head of a Kenyan children's choir that has performed around the world.
Music even infiltrated Michael's dreams, ultimately prompting him to decide to try out for Morristown's Got Talent.
"I had a dream I was on stage and music notes were coming out of my mouth," he said. "There were sad people, and I made them happy. I came down that morning and said, 'I'm going to try out.'"
Still, Michael admitted, "I'm, like, a little bit nervous."
"You didn't show it," his mother said.
The Normandy Park School second-grader first decided he wanted to sing the Annie classic because he couldn't really avoid it, as his mother constantly sang or hummed it in the car. "It was a hard practice," Michael said.
Then came the tryouts, then, a little sibling rivalry.
"I was really shocked and surprised," he said. "Because, the day I came home, my brother smiled and said I didn't make it. I said, 'show me.'"
Besides Morristown's Got Talent, the little singer has a lot on his plate, including recent performances in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, playing Linus.
When asked if he still had Linus' trademark blanket, Michael said, "uh, yeah!"
With less than a month to go before the big performance, Michael said he knows it's not about winning the event that matters, "It's about participating and having hope," he said.
