Morristown Church Preps for Father's Day Fun Run

The 1 mile/5k Walk and 5K Race will be at Sunrise Lake at Lewis Morris Park on Sunday.

While many are out shopping for Father’s Day gifts, some have a dad that’s charitable or into fitness. If that’s the case, this upcoming Father’s day Fun Walk/Run would be perfect.

Morristown’s St. Peter's Episcopal Church Youth Group, along with the church’s Men’s Bible Study Group, are hosting the fun run on Sunday to benefit the youth group’s upcoming mission trip to Top Sail in North Carolina.

"Reverend Melissa Hall, our Assistant Rector at St. Peter’s, thought of the idea of  youth run as a “Fun”-raiser - an opportunity to raise money to support St. Peter’s Youth Mission to North Carolina and getting our family parish together for fun and fellowship," said Ken Boccino, of St. Peter’s. "Through the good works of enthusiastic and dedicated youth and adult volunteers, we kept the “fun” in all the work leading up to this event.  We are grateful for their work efforts."

Leading the walk will be Morristown Mayor Tim Dougherty and his wife Mary, who is the Morristown Democratic chairperson.

“It’s another thing about being part of the community of Morristown. We’re thrilled to be leading the walk,” said Tim Dougherty. “It’s a reminder of all the groups, churches and organizations in town and the variety of activities and events they have.”

"The Mayor will be starting off the first walk / run (1 mile) and then running the course for the 1 p.m. event," said Boccino

The 1 mile/5k Walk and 5K Race will be at Sunrise Lake at Lewis Morris Park with the walk starting at 1 p.m. and the 5K race starting at 2:30 p.m. Registration can be done at any time up to the start of either race.

The youth group heads off to North Carolina on June 29 with the youth of three other parishes in our Diocese (Redeemer, Morristown; St. Peters, Essex Fells and St. Luke's, Montclair). There they will participate in activities to promote a fun and healthy parish fellowship.

“Donations collected from this event will support the cost of sending our youth to Top Sail, North Carolina,” said Boccino. “The youth will also be making a donation to Abdulai's Project, an effort to build sturdy housing in the remote areas of Sierra Leone, Africa.

You can support the youth in a number of ways:

  • As a Sponsor:  If one of their youths asks if you might sponsor them as they participate in either the 1 Mile Walk/Run or 5K Race, consider making a pledge.  Pledges can be made either by per mile/kilometer or a flat rate.
  • As a Participant: Consider joining the youth in some fun fitness in either the 1 Mile Walk / Run or 5K Race.  A Registration Form is attached.
  • As a Volunteer: They can use help in the planning and running of this event.  Opportunities to volunteer include the areas of advertising/promotion, event registration, day of walk / race logistics and refreshments / spectator comfort.

“Our youth are excited about the fund raising opportunity,” said the church. “They believe that this event is an excellent opportunity for fellowship in a beautiful park setting as well as supporting their Mission Trip effort.”
