Both boys and girls swimming at Morristown High School seem to be starting a winning trend as they convincingly out-swam Columbia High School, racking up their third "W" of the season on Dec. 9.
Versatility and depth were both displayed in the win as Coach Donna Gelegonya mixed things up, placing some of her top swimmers in different events while giving up-and-comers the chance to get their feet wet.
The MHS boys were impressive across the board yet again as they were placed among the top three spots in every event.
Demonstrating his distance swimming, junior Gregory Macchia placed first in both the 200-meter freestyle (2:13.01) and the 400-meter freestyle (4:44.00). Macchia never seemed to appear fatigued through his 400-meter race as every stroke was displayed with the same finesse and strength as the last.
Not a stranger to top finishes, junior Ryan Swift gave another strong performance as he placed first in the 200-meter Individual Medley (2:28.41) and second in the 100-meter Butterfly (1:05.70).
"Swift is always solid for us," said Gelegonya. "I put him in the 100 fly today just to try something a little different for him and he did really well and I'm pretty pleased with his time."
Adding to the score was sophomore Will Ashton, who displayed impressive speed in the water. Ashton placed first in the 50-meter freestyle (26.97), and though he was disqualified in his 100-meter freestyle due to uniform regulation issues, he still put up a time of 1:02.02. Fortunately, Matt Mitchell wasn't far behind, as he was awarded the first place slot with a time of 1:02.00.
The MHS girls held their own, as well. Rachel Emodi, who usually competes in distance events, was impressive in both the 200-meter freestyle (2:29.35) and the 100-meter freestyle (1:05.02) as she finished in first place in both events.
Lyndsey Giostra took first in the 200-meter Individual Medley (2:45.19) and second in the 100-meter Butterfly (1:13.49).
With both teams putting up top times, many are focused and still preparing for the team's first big test, against swimming powerhouse Mendham High School. Senior Jenny Shih, who placed second in the 50-meter freestyle (30.69) said she is really looking forward for the big test. "I'm proud of what we accomplished today; this was a good meet but I think our first real test as a team is going to be against Mendham."
The Colonials next meet will be against Parsippany Hills at 4 p.m. Dec. 13. They then face off against Mendham at 4 p.m. Dec. 16.
