It was here. Then, it was gone.
No, we're not talking about Greenberry's, though that caught a lot of people by surprise, as well. We're talking about Yo & Papa, formerly Calaloo Cafe, formerly, well, open.
Shortly after St. Patrick's Day last year, the restaurant–known for its outdoor seating in the summer–closed its doors for business. All was quiet. It was messy. Then, it was cleaned up a little and the sign for Yo & Papa was taken down.
Then, all was quiet again. Recently, as the Morris County St. Patrick's Day Parade in Morristown approached, rumors began to spread that something–anything–would open up there for Parade Day, as people had seen workers cleaning up the joint once more.
Yet, today, it remains closed.
So, in this week's "Occupy This Space," we're asking people once again what they would like to see occupy the former Yo & Papa. Another restaurant? A bar? Something completely different? Chime in.

A billiard or ping pong hall. Of course, if the lease came with the previous liquor license, that would be great but not necessary.

The place has always needed a facelift, even when it was Calaloo ... It is pretty big downstairs ... Hummm, I agree, maybe a billiard hall with live bands.

It started as a Perkins Pancake House, then concerted to quality restaurants with a french flair one was named La Monet, Both had excellent food and did quite well, It was purchased by Larry Berger who conerted it into a casual dining spot with a big bar, That was around the same time that Society Hill replaced the Wedgewood restaurant where TD Bank now stands. Both places enlarged the bars and now catered to drinker with food as an additional feature and ever louder bands, Callaloo was the first to move outside.. Callaloo managed to outlast the 4 versions of Jimmies with each attracting fewer diners and more bar patrons until the action moved up town as bar goers tend to follow the newest bar looking for novelty and entertainment. The residents suffering from an evergrowing noise abd trash problem were not unhappy to see them go.
I would like to see a book store/cafe that served food and drinks with a pleasant outside patio to sit with your book or IPad and sip your drink while you watch the world go by. With so many apartments in the area, having an outside space to enjoy could serve a real need. Perhaps they could charge a cover charge after an half an hour to help cover the costs of patrons spending the extra time.

Residents? This isnt exactly a suburban street we're talking about, here. Hopefully whatever opens there is not run by the same people who've mismanaged it so severely for so long. Whats next? A biker bar?
