Parts of Morristown Still in the Dark Wednesday

JCP&L press conference scheduled for 2 p.m.

While many Morristown businesses and residents welcomed Wednesday like any other normal (read: powered) day, many here and in surrounding communities woke up once again without electricity.

From 10 a.m. to just before noon, Morristown Medical Center was added to that list.

Pam Garretson, public relations for the hospital, said the power had been restored at about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.  During the outage, they were presently on emergency power. "We're still taking patients for the ED (Emergency Department), and trauma, as usual. Patient care is not impacted," she had said.

A press conference with JCP&L was scheduled for 2 p.m. at the electrical supplier's Convent Station headquarters.

Readers had also been sending messages Wednesday morning indicating the neighborhood surrounding the hospital had also just lost power.

Mayor Tim Dougherty, who yesterday held a press conference saying JCP&L crews were expected to be working around the clock to get power back on those who were affected by the flooding of the Ridgedale Avenue substation (those whose power remains out because of downed wires may have to wait longer) was expected to speak with JCP&L representatives Wednesday morning, and would have a statement shortly thereafter.

"Town Officials were advised that ... the restoration efforts will continue throughout the night," according to the Tuesday evening release from Capt. Steven Sarinelli. "We thank all residents for their patience and cooperation during this difficult time."

As businesses began to reopen and residents in Morristown began to power up throughout the day Tuesday, Dougherty said that almost the entire town should have power before the end of the night.

He did stress, however, that there are still a number of damaged power lines throughout Morristown–as a result of Hurricane Irene over the weekend–which he said are being addressed as quickly as possible.

I hope the information I'm passing on here is valid and helpful: My boyfriend who works at Morristown Medical just sent me this text message - " The hospital just went pitch black. A police officer just told me they shut off this grid to help power the substations for the rest of Morristown. Then they'll turn it on in an hour. If that's true, the rest of Morristown should have power by tomorrow." ... I really hope this is the case because the business I work for has not had power since Saturday night and we are not being paid for the work days we are missing!

It was accurate... the reality is JCP&L is running new cable to the Convent Street Station as the Ridgedale one is still messed up. Yes the HQ Plaza Towers and 1776 Buildings are without power and it is beyond frustrating.

Looking at the outage map, the number of households out in Morristown has jumped from 8,000 and change early this morning to 10,255. I wonder how the shore is faring ahead of this Labor day weekend however...

I went to the power station, there wasnt any workers cars in the parking lot. What a sorry excuse for a power company. Work through the night my a##!!!!

Mike i totally agree with you! Since tuesday when we were told we would have power by 4, then by midnight- I have not seen a truck! I had hopes when i saw a house near the courthouse on western with power but then realized our street lights were out soo i would not have power... One of our neighbors had to call JP&L and they told her by Sunday, kind of different from what she had been hearing through the news... I have been out and about due to work in the late evenings and my house is on Western and all my housemates and I have not seen a truck anywhere at night- and its frustrating, not to mention dangerousss, driving down a dark street ! Hoping we have power soon because schoolwork by candlelight is not ideal and running to and from campus to use computers is not fun or funny when it comes to gas... just saying.

Heck I will volunteer my time (give me a chainsaw) to get these damaged trees off the lines and have the power gurus get up and replace the broken/torn lines....its getting a little rediculous with the awesome weather we have had this week, how is progress still so slow (and announcements so confusing/incorrect)?

It's looking pretty grim from what I just read on the First Energy Corp. website:

".....We anticipate that the majority of our Customers will be restored by the weekend with full restoration by early next week......

Altamont Court (the dead-end street off Elm Street) lost power Sunday morning, like everyone else. It came back on around noon on Sunday. Then it went out on Monday at 1 PM and has been out ever since. A JCP&L person contacted by a neighbor said that her house (her street?) was slated to be up and running again by Friday, and if not Friday then by EARLY NEXT WEEK!! JCP&L does not instill confidence. I read in the paper where after Hurricane Floyd, it was decided that a special wall should be built to protect the Ridgedale substation from future "100-year floods." Do we conclude that Irene was responsible for the Whippany River's TWO-HUNDRED YEAR FLOOD? Now, why would thoughful engineers place such an important facility in such a vulnerable spot?

I'm told the King's and the Walgreen's on South Street are open at the moment. I'd bring cash though, if you have it, in case their card machines aren't working. Maybe try the hospital gift shop, as well. I believe they sell batteries. If you go into the front entrance of the hospital and go straight down the hall, there is a gift shop on the right hand side.

No JCPL turcks, no police - the light at Washington and Hillcrest is still out (although the gas stations across the street have full power). Is there No priority for Morris Township residents? Or should we just be happy that - while we have no power - we can go use the restauarnts and bars in town???

Cable requires power. There are batteries in the large boxes on the poles, but those only provide a few hours of backup. The power is injected at those boxes and powers the inline signal amplifiers, fiber to copper nodes for Internet/phone and the wifi access points. Both fios and dsl work as long as the telco central office has power.

We live on Phoenix and have been without power. We desperately need D batteries for our flashlights. Does anyone know where we can get some? Have generator for refridgerator and sump pump; we are using it minimally for computer. We are frankly sick and tired of JCP&L as well as local town officials and mayor who insist on giving us false hope with their empty promises. Ironically, our electric bill came in the mail on Monday. They can wait to get paid. Cost cutting measures has rendered JCP&L without adequate manpower and efficient, well maintianed equipment/ resources, especially during a time of crisis such as this! I have not seen a single truck, worker or hint of "crews": working as they say "around the clock" to repair power lines. The substation is noew inoperable on Ridgedale but those affected now have power, according to a very knowldegeable! Broken promises and refusal to announce where crews are expected to restore power specifically, by area. Nothing but glowing comments about JCP&L from the mayor!? They must have been a substantial contributor to his election campaign! Cablevision even restored internet and television, probably telephone but we wouldn't know as we continue to suffer without electricity. Speculation of restoration by Friday or early next week?! This is totally unacceptable! Someone in a position of authority who has the best interest sof the residents of Morristown needs to step up an put pressure on the power companies to resolve this situation!

Not to mention - we've ran out of hot water and now may have to check into a hotel. If JCP&L knew the problem takes longer to repair, then why did they leave a message at our numbers on Monday that it would be repaired by the end of the evening? Don't give promises you can't keep - and stop giving us deadlines that cannot be materialized. This is the dumbest thing you can do to your customers.

I probably should have posted this earlier but I think the press and we should start asking some specific questions: How is power being transmitted to areas that have it now?; By whom and under what process was it decided that certain areas should receive power as opposed to others; In what order and in what time frame will power be restored to the remaining residents, best case, worst case; What emergency plan was in place prior to this "100 year flash flood" in order to respond to a catastrophic malfunction of the power station? For the town: What actions should citizens take to protect themselves and property, fridges, generator safety, sewer and water, Where can we find batteries, candles, and water; What can we do to help. Can we meet at town hall on Sat. at 10AM and act as a massive clean up crew? Can we take water, flashlights and food to our elderly and sick?. We can help but we need direction and coordination.

Thanks, Kim! What's a little discouraging is that I had heard the same thing Tuesday about JCP&L having to hire a private service to cut down the tree. There was a tree-cutting service truck outside the apartments Wednesday. They slowed down in front of the apartments, and then just kept going. It really seems like no one is in charge at this point. It's very disorganized to say the least! Should it take this long to just cut down the tree??

And if it is not on, please keep calling them and file an online complaint with BPU. They did at least respond.

Kim, I just talked to someone who drove by the apartments at 44 Hill about 40 minutes ago, and everything was still out. This is a dumb question, but what does BPU stand for, and how do I file an online complaint with them?

This is not a dumb question at all, I just use them regularly through work. BPU is the Board of Public Utilities of NJ. They handle any complaints you have with your utility company. Typically people contact them when their utilities have been shut off for one reason or the other. Their website is http://www.nj.gov/bpu/index.shtml
Just go to residential services and then file a complaint. They responded within 2 1/2 hours. Although again, they claim we are back on and it appears we are not. I will call the outage line again when I get home.

Or call BPU (Board of Public Utilities) to file a complaint at (800)624-0241

I'll be back to Hill Street in the next 30 minutes or so. I'll be sure to update this post if I get there before someone else.

As per Morristown Police Dept.

Community: Town Hall Senior Center, 3rd floor, is open all night with food and water for those without power.

When this is all said and done, I would like the BPU to set up a town hall meeting with JCPL, so they can tell us to our face why they dropped the ball on all of us. And to explain to everyone what part of underground explosions they consider normal.

Would make for entertaining evening!
