Man Killed Crossing Morristown Street
Police seeking witnesses to crash that claimed life of Hamburg man near Morristown Medical Center.
A 33-year-old Hamburg man was struck by a driver and killed on Madison Avenue in Morristown Thursday night.
John Pirres was crossing the street near 65 Madison Avenue around 7:30 p.m. when he was struck by a 2011 black Dodge Durango, according to a release sent by Acting Morris County Prosecutor Fredric Knapp's office.
Pirres was transported to Morristown Medical Center and died there shortly after.
Officers were able to identify the driver at the scene, but Knapp's office asked for help from the public in providing information about the crash. No charges have been filed.
Anyone who witnessed the event is asked to contact Lt. Stephen Wilson of the Morris County Prosecutor's Office at 973-285-6212 or Sgt. Tyrone Jackson of the Morristown Police Department at 973-538-2200. Calls will be kept confidential.

this wasn't "near" the hospital - it was directly in front of the hospital. they were doing CPR right in the street DIRECTLY in front of the hospital. i was first car at the light going into the entrance of the hospital. this was directly in front of the light about 25 ft. ambulances had not even arrived yet - it seemed like someone in one of the cars was doing the CPR because the police and ambulances arrived right after 7:30 ... my question is why couldn't some from the ER come out and save this person or help ..... we were right at the hospital.

Well firstly... The (very busy) ER is on the opposite side of the hospital, on Franklin. Second, there are certain policies, laws even, that dictate the responses for emergencies happening outside the walls of a hospital, even if it is right in front. And the paramedics are more than capable.

i know ... its just so frustrating to think there was a defibilator so close that could have saved this person and they died; right there in the hospital. i understand that no one in the ER could probably leave .. it's just that i wish they could have saved this person. it's sad.

A defibrillator is to get the heart back into a proper rhythm not to restart a stopped heart.

Ambulances carry defibrillators. Sometimes the defibrillators are useless; not every stopped heart can be shocked, sadly.
Mary Frangos, I am so sorry for your loss. Your family is in my thoughts.

in my heart I'm going to envision Johnny passing away while trying to save someone else from getting hit being a hero....because that was the type of guy I knew him to be. He will be missed by many and talked bout fondly and with tears of happiness retelling the amazing stories we all have with him.

Pretty sad that John was taken so suddenly like this. I have many fond memories with him and still can hear his laughter as I write this. He was one of those great friends that listened intently, busted your chops, cared for others, and was a joy to be around. Rest in peace John, we will miss you.

This is a tragedy. The fact that the driver left the scene is even worse. Pedestrians being struck by hit and run vehicles is far too common. I have numerous clients with tragic injuries. Often the vehicles that strike them are either never found or end up not having insurance.

The driver did not leave the scene. That's not whatvthe article says. It specifically says they were able to identify the driver of the Durango at the scene ....

I see you are right. Thank you for the correction. I though they only had a description of the truck. Reading it again I see the driver was identified. Thank God for this. It is such a tragedy nonetheless. Despite the "stop" signs on the crosswalks there are still a great number of pedestrian accidents. This fatal one is especially sad.

I work right across the street from the hospital, directly opposite the accident scene. Madison Ave is very dangerous there, there's a light, but then it's a downhill heading over to where you can get on 287. Drivers can't see down the little slope right away after cresting the hill - the hospital even stations a police car there every morning with lights flashing to warn everyone to use caution. At 730 the light was failing, poor visibilty due to the slope, just an awful combination of events. Johnny sounded like a great guy from all the comments from his friends. All I think is that God needs him somewhere else right now where he can help.

Yolanda, I should have realized you meant to share analogies. I'm truly sorry for bringing in your work as a lawyer. I was commenting more so about this and the one previous article about safety and another tragic family loss due to this accident. The inaccuracies written in this and one other article left details missing and a chance to fill in the blanks. This might address driver reactions on Route 124, known as Madison Avenue.

John was one of my best friends growing up, but lost touch over the years. I have to agree with Michael James Myers in how that is exactly the kind of person John was. No matter the circumstance he was always there for his friends to lift them up. I will always remember his kindness and my heart goes out to his family. His memory will never fade from those that knew and loved him. I will miss you my friend... R.I.P. Johnny

Rest in Peace - John Pirres.
Who is responsible here... The driver. All Drivers. You drive a 2000 pound weapon. You are responsible for what happens, No. Matter. What. In this case, the driver will have to live the rest of his/her life knowing they killed someone. I hope I never have that burden.
