Photos, Video: MLK Honored at Dual Church Event

The Episcopal Church held combined services with the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Morristown to honor the memory of civil rights pioneer.

It was a service fit for a King.

On Sunday, Jan. 16, The Church of the Redeemer Episcopal Church held a combined service with the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church to honor the memory of Martin Luther King, who would be celebrating his 82nd birthday this year.

The Rev. Sidney Williams Jr., who took over pastoral duties for Bethel AME in November, provided the sermon. In his sermon he explained how dreamers are often met with resistance and that perseverance is necessary to achieve success. He provided examples of how Joseph, son of Jacob, who was an interpreter of dreams, was sold into slavery by his jealous brothers, and rose to become the most powerful man in Egypt, second only to Pharaoh. He also discussed the life of Christ and his dream to change the world.

During the service, the Bethel AME choir provided renditions of Gospel music, which appeared to thrill members of both congregations.

Following church services, parishoners were invited to light refreshments and a cake celebrating the memory of Martin Luther King.

Lots of great music and beautiful people worshiping together -- what a wonderful service!

I think Martin would have been proud, though we still have work to do.

I was overwhelmed with emotion in sharing this beautiful service with my brothers and sisters with whom there is so much in common. Participating in this service is one more piece achieved of the MLK Dream that we must persist in working to make come true!
