Power to Be Fully Restored This Weekend, Twp. Mayor Says
Peter Mancuso said many utility crews were in the area Thursday.
In an update Thursday evening, Morris Township officials said many JCP&L crews had been in the area and that many had their power restored.
Morris Township Mayor Peter Mancuso also spoke with JCP&L President Donald Lynch and state Board of Public Utilities President Robert Hanna Thursday morning and "expressed our concerns with JCP&L’s restoration efforts.
"Mr. Lynch indicated that power will be restored to almost all of Morris Township by Saturday evening," Mancuso said in the letter. "We share in your frustration with JCP&L's lack of communication and information with regard to estimated time of restoration for neighborhoods/streets. We began demanding a comprehensive restoration plan from JCP&L once the storm subsided, over a week ago. To date we only have projected restorations by municipality for each day.
"We are working with governmental officials at all levels including Congressman [Rodney] Frelinghuysen, Governor [Chris] Christie, Senator [Anthony] Bucco [Sr.], Assemblyman [Michael Patrick] Carroll and Assemblyman [Anthony] Bucco [Jr.] to address JCP&L's restoration efforts. We have been communicating with Mr. Lynch, president of JCP&L each day via conference call.
Mancuso went on in the letter to state that approximately 5,500 of the approximately 7,800 power outages have been restored. "But this still leaves far too many of our residents without power," he said. JCP&L advised officials Thursday that indicates they expected to restore power to an additional 1,800 Morris Township customers tomorrow. "We will continue working diligently to push JCP&L from all levels of government to get restorations made as quickly as possible," Mancuso said.
The Township mayor's statement come on the heels of several increasingly-negative comments from officials in Morristown, including a letter from Morristown Mayor Tim Dougherty, where the mayor pointed out that JCP&L has gone beyond its projected 7-to-10 day restoration timeframe that was given following Hurricane Sandy.
"It's been frustrating," Morristown Business Administrator Michael Rogers said Thursday. "It has been continued frustration that we share with our residents and it's—I can only look to JCP&L to hopefully learn from this experience on how they can improve."

Dorothy Drive represent! We can't believe it either!? They said for the hardest hit areas it may take beyond Nov 7th? All the trees have been pulled from the lines about a week ago and still nothing. Very few lines, it any appear down, but we are still out. It is hard driving all through Burnham Park and seeing the lights on to turn onto a dark road.

Isn't most of Burnham Park still out? I live on Fairmount Ave. and nothing has been touched. There is NO WAY we will get power back this weekend; I'd bet my house on it. There's been no communication from JCP&L. They need to go.

I didn't realize Fairmount was still out. It is worse than I thought. I saw some houses on West Lake appeared to be restored, Burnham Parkway as well as Hillcrest was back up. I will be shocked if we are back up by the end of the weekend.

It seems by comments on this site that the same neighborhoods in the South West section of Morris Township (Burnham Park, Rolling Hill, James Street and Wood Road) experience longer durations of power outages than others.
Our neighborhoods should unite for a common voice and demand solutions. Does the infrastructure need to be updated? Do Feeder Lines need to be buried? Revise the JCP&L power outage site to show detail by Street so people can help verify information in their area? (Our neighborhood called JCP&L daily to ensure our outage was reported / submit new report of complete loss of power -- after JCP&L called our non-working Fios or Cablevision home numbers to tell us power was back on and we weren't getting that message -- JCP&L should enable entry of a cell phone number when reporting power is restored)

It's amazing what these utility companies can get away with. Let's see how many customers I still have if I'm inept at my job. Still in the dark since the Monday of the storm.

Micheal Rogers THE only way for jcp&l to improve is to get them the heck out of this state. This will happen again, they have 2 huge strikes now (irene, sandy) I am not, as a taxpayer, willing to wait for strike 3! 2 weekw is waaaay too long to wait for power in an area that was not devastated. I just hope the people of our town will show a little respect to these guys trying to work, the ones by me are from indiana and its not their fault. Just try and tell yourself that when you see them. Blame lies with management.

Jesse is right - Burnham Park was out for 7 day (TWICE) last year and once again we are in the dark - now for 11 DAYS - When the electricity went out I knew we would be last - and the facts speak for themselves - Why was it only yesterday that I saw the first utility trucks in Morris Township - Look Madison has their own utility company - got their residents back super quick and now they are helping us - that is pretty bad!

ill believe it when i see it aswell we are just off James street and we been out of power since monday the 29th of October at 9:30. First they said 7 to 10 days now there saying today tomorrow or sunday and there also saying if your not back on by this weekend it could be another 2 weeks until your back on by thanksgiving!
Its quite odd how they got power back to Morristown so quick but we're still in the dark and the cold.
When we had Irene last year power was only out a day or 2 and Irene was much more severe with lots of power lines down so i dont get it this time ,we were spared pretty much so i dont see much devestation for them to wait a month to get the power back on.
Me and my wife are also expecting our first child making matters worse ,we dont want to come home to a cold and dark house ,so we may be contacting fema soon if power will not be on in another 2 weeks.

We are off james street as well and it was 8 days no power with irene. Good luck with fema, compared to those at th shore id say we'd be last again with any help from them. Remember, they have a great shelter set up for us (what a joke). I spoke with the repair men (they, believe it or not, have a more realistic idea when they will get power back on) and the one guy said james street is a huge project (probably why it was left for last). Setting poles today, so go look, I will be there, and they have to run all new wire up to south street. He said sunday, I hope he's right. If we don't have power by Sunday, as the governor said, he lives in mendham so we should all go over to his house and ask if we can stay with him til our power comes on. Wonder how that would go over?

"...power will be restored to almost all of Morris Township by Saturday evening." - The key word here is 'almost'. I am willing to bet there will still be a couple hundred Morris Township residents out of power come Sunday night.
And to anyone who is saying if power is not restored by Sunday then it will be Thanksgiving....where are you getting your information from. Anyone who I hear that from says they have heard it second hand, so I believe that is just a rumor for now (hopefully).

This needs to be said. First I feel badly for anyone still without power. Mine came back Thursday afternoon (10 days w/o). And I agree that from speaking with utility workers the communication and perhaps mgmt between JCPL, the other workers, government and residents has been bad.
However - the fact remains that we were all warned that this would be an epic storm several days in advance. We were told that we should expect power to be out 1-2 weeks. We were given tips such as stock up on various supplies, top off the gas tanks and stay off the roads unless it's an emergency. Instead people panicked and became irrational and angry. People didn't get enough gas so lines several hundred yards long resulted. Countless idiot drivers drove through road closed barriers only to have to turn around when they actually got to the downed poles and wires. Does JCPL deserve some blame and investigation? Certainly. But the fact remains that we were all told what to expect. NJ has not seen a storm like this in over 100 years. Northern NJ was hammered, imagine what central and southern NJ are going through. Those complaining about not getting power back within the timeframe we were warned about don't know the extent of damage or the work required to fix it. Not a JCPL worker or shill, just someone with reasoning abilities.

Nordrom, the problem is that JCP&L has either flat-out failed at communication with its customers, or they have flat-out lied about time frames and number of customers restored. They are a horrible company and changes need to be made.

NORDROM KENI-- it's obvious you have power. To the extent that people could, many DID prepare for the storm. There are those with infants, the elderly and such who may have provisions, but are cold at night with nowhere to go. People also have to work, so as much as you 'topped off' your gas tank, at some point you did need a refill

I got it back less than 24 hours ago. I went 10 days without, and I didn't complain because that is what I was told to expect. I didn't complain last year either during Irene or the snowstorm. I understand that there are people with special needs, but for people to react with outrage when simply what was warned would happen did happen makes no sense to me. I'm tired of the dark and cold I have kids etc etc alright I can sympathize but this WAS the prediction for all of us. What did you think it would be like to live in your homes without power for 1-2 weeks?
Josh
3:42 pm on Friday, November 9, 2012
Nordrom - So how many gallons of gas to you buy because you knew we would be without power and gas for 10-11 days. How many times did you get a phone call confirming from JCP&L that your power had come back on, when you were still sitting in the dark. The mayor even said that JCP&L was unwilling to share detailed information on when repairs would be done.
The lack of information and communication from JCP&L is where the frustration comes from. They randomly put restore numbers and estimates up and then the next day they were all new numbers, were these additional restore people or just a new number from their random number generator.
And to all those people who are now outside the timeframe we were given, what do you say to them?

Nordrom, As charming as your "Holier than thou" attitude is, you should check your facts before bragging about your reasoning abilities. We are from Morris Township and spent the storm in Mt. Laurel, a town in Southern NJ. Any outages were up in a matter of days (1 to 2). It is easy to "armchair quarterback" when you are sitting in a lighted, warm place. Yes, the storm was unprecedented in NJ. However, week long power outages in my area of Morris Township are not. This is our third in 2 years, and we are still out (12 days and counting). I have lived in my neighborhood since '79 and we have had easily over 120 outages of various durations. We have begged and pleaded JCP&L for a general assessment of our problems to no avail. We ran out of patience years ago.

11:32 am on Sunday, November 11, 2012
Lol where are the faults in my reasoning abilities? Everything I said is true. And...you spent the storm in an area that wasn't as hard hit and had power back in 1-2 days. I spent 10 days in Morris County without power/heat. Sorry, *who* is the armchair quarterback here?
And "week long power outages in Morris Twp" (all of NJ actually) were predicted well in advance before Sandy and Irene. I went without power for days/weeks during all 3 events myself. I wasn't somewhere else with electricity and heat lecturing others who were enduring the hardship.
Guess it boils down to hardiness. The majority are soft, and a few folks understand logic and can endure true disasters. Most others just want to crucify someone/something.

So because James Street was such a big project, the logical choice is to... leave it to the last round of repairs? Brilliant. New wires all the way to South St.? WTF is that? How are the people upstream of this mess getting power, magic fairy dust?
First Energy is an excellent example of unregulated (yes, it's supposed to be regulated, but that's not improving things) capitalism at its worst. I remember after the October storm last year when we were out for a week their website had all this "OMG! Disaster!" rhetoric while the Investor Relations pages were bragging about how much they increased their profits. It's not rocket science, they are in it for short term gains, which means cutbacks in linemen, maintenance, and planning for the future. This can be said of many crappy utilities these days...

Nordrom, we did prepare. I made sure we had candles, flashlights, bottled water, and non-perishable food. But you can't prepare to live in a house without heat in sub-freezing temperatures. I have a 21-month-old son who cannot live in a house that is 43 degrees. Thankfully, we've been able to stay with family in Madison and my son is in MA with my parents. How was I supposed to prepare for that??

So you are saying that you prepared, and you have a complaint against who/what, mother nature? Because what happened is what we were warned would happen. It is cold in NNJ in November, and we got slammed by a hurricane. So you are looking for heads to roll because an awful storm hit and everyone didn't get power and heat back immediately?
I guess that's human nature - look for scapegoats when an unfortunate act of nature occurs.

Funny how we get notification from our mayor NOW. I emailed him on Monday, one week after the loss of power, and asked him what he was doing to take care of this problem. Apparently, not much. That mirrors the fact that I didn't get a response from him. My neighbor just spoke to the linemen and they said no power until Sunday. At the moment, my complaint is against you, Nordrom. You were accusing people of not being prepared. We were as prepared as we could be. I understand Mother Nature can neither be controlled nor perfectly predicted. I'm not complaining about the hurricane. But it's been 12 days and I've barely even seen any work crews in my neighborhood. We had minimal damage to wires and the trees have been cleared. In the past year, I have been without power for a month. We live in one of the wealthiest counties in the US and we have a power company that is unable to effectively communicate with the people for whom it is supposed to provide service.

A) You were told that you might be without power for 1-2 weeks. What part of that didn't you understand? I went 10 days in the dark and cold myself. But I expected it and prepared for it. And as many others have said the whole "I don't see trucks in front of my house I didn't see trucks out today" doesn't mean jack. Do you know what the electrical grid is? Know much about it and how it works? Yeah, didn't think so. At any rate, you almost certainly have power back now anyway (unless you live on Wetmore...man I feel badly for you guys).
B) Can you explain to me the correlation between a county's wealth and a power company's ability to restore power at a certain time after a disaster?
