Power Outages Continue to Drop in Morristown Area
It's cold comfort, however, for those still in the dark.
If you're reading this from your repowered home, we're happy for you. If you're reading from a Smartphone currently being charged at one of several available charging stations in the area, we feel for you.
The good news is power outage reports continue to drop in the Morristown area, as municipalities continue to recover from Hurricane Sandy (and, if you're among those now with power, let us know by clicking here).
The latest numbers, as of about 9 a.m. Thursday indicate Morristown now with about 31 percent of its residents without power (2,948 houses); Morris Township has 62 percent still in the dark (5,363); Morris Plains has the fewest out of power but with the highest percentage, at 81 percent (1,978 of 2,445 residents).
These figures, however, are cold comfort for those still waiting for theirs. Comments on the Morristown Patch Facebook page Wednesday evening showed that, for some, entering the fourth day of outages has patience wearing very thin.
"Unfortunately, we are among the 84% without power in Morris Plains and since the other half of my street has been on for 4+hours, I am pretty sure we have been completely forgotten," wrote Carol Beeck.
Liz Sofman, also still out of power Wednesday night wrote, "Chestnut Street is still completely black. The downed utility pole on Western still hasn't been taken care of and it looks like Western is blacked out too."
Adrienne Beck offered a theory on the Facebook page about those lowered numbers on JCP&L's outage map.
"It's probably saying only 33% left in morristown bc they called last night saying power was restored when it actually wasn't, so that knocked their numbers down even though things are still not fixed," she wrote.
Beck doubled down on her skepticism Thursday morning.
"How can they say only 33% still don't have power in Morristown when that list is so short and so many are still in the dark...I'm calling shenanigans," she wrote.
Utility officials, not just for the Morristown area but all over the storm-hit region have told people to prepare for seven-to-10 days without power. Morristown Mayor Tim Dougherty said that was still JCP&L's stance during their most recent conference call on Wednesday.
"We're putting a lot of pressure on them," he said Wednesday. "They want to get the power back to the people."
Residents without power that have not yet done so are advised to report their outage to JCP&L at 1-888-544-4877.

We lost our power here in Chester Township at exactly 2 pm on Monday, which makes me think that was planned. Since then nothing. It's freezing. When I called JCP&L to report the outage, I got a voice message not to expect power for 7-10 days. I think I will deduct from my bill each day without power.

You don't pay for power you don't use. That's the beauty of electricity, its on a usage basis, your cable bill on the other hand is a flat fee monthly.

Why doesn't JCP&L put out a web resource that tells their side of the situation? Treat people like grownups and tell them why it's taking so long to restore power. When people know that facts behind the problems they are less apt to become angry. Too many officials think that people can't understand, or shouldn't be privy to, the actual nuts and bolts of recovery efforts. So they simply let the population sit in the dark, literally as well as figuratively. I'd really like to know why the traffic signals are still out 4 days after the storm. The power company said they have hundreds of crews from all over the US working around the clock. Well, I haven't seen a single one.

Although power has been back for a while here on Mt. Kemble Ave., we lost cable and internet and phone service on Tuesday morning which has never come back (I realize this is not a high priority at all when folks are still without power and homes to go back to), but with communication being a big part of getting back up and running, have you heard any reports from our major communication service providers in regards to their status in getting back up an running? Just curious if this is isolated or if other folks have power but no phone / internet / tv?

Brad, I've had no phone or TV since Tuesday. Cablevision say they're on it, for what it's worth. I'm lucky to have internet and power here on South St.

320 South (Parsons) is still out although 310, 330, and 340 have power, which makes no sense. The other half of James Street Commons lost power early this morning. What's up with that?!

Perhaps Parsons suffered more water damage being on lower ground than 310 and 340? You're right, it doesn't make much sense.

I live on Wetmore Ave down by the dead end as well. It is so frustrating to see that so much of the town has power back, but no one has even been down to help us. I was told by the town of Morristown OEM that someone from JCP&L would be down there yesterday to assess the situation so the town could start to remove the trees. Well someone from Ohio Edison did go down there yesterday to tie up some wires, but 24 hours later nothing has been done. I emailed the mayor last night to see when someone would be there to help us, but I have yet to be given the consideration of a reply. So far the way this thing whole thing has been handeled has been sloppy. Half of Lidgerwood Parkway is still without power and JCP&L was reporting that the whole street has been restored. Really? You don't check to make sure that everyone has power before you leave an area.

To the people complaining about not having power deal with it! There was a lot of damage done during the storm including some people who have lost there house. Your whining isn't helping anything, and you need to learn to make the best of it like the majority of us people from Morristown have.

The warnings before the storm was for 7-10 days without power. Three days in and people are going crazy.

Agreed. As one of the Wetmore residents without power and a huge tree down outside their house, I feel lucky to only have to deal with this inconvenience. It just seems illogical to bicker and complain about the power being out for 3 days when the death toll in the ny/nj region keeps climbing and many people have lost everything they had to their name due to the storm.

Since having no power means that I (and my elderly, home bound, infirm, and handicapped neighbors) have no heat, no hot water, and the possibly of raw sewage spewing out of my sinks this weekend, I'll complain all I want.
One should consider that everyone's situation is different before going on the attack.

There are 2 gas stations without power since Monday on Washington St. I bet they have gas just no way to pump it. How about a focus on getting power back to the businesses that can provide resources to the community.

People who are defending JCP&L on this page either work for them or never lost power. There is NO communication from JCP&L -- THAT is the problem, and not the storm aftermath. Four days in and they still have no reasonable restoration estimate for individual neighborhoods/municipalities? JCP&L has been saying 7-10 days for everyone, every day since Monday (is it a moving 7-10 days that resets every day, or 7-10 days from Monday?). There should be some difference between Morris Plains and the Jersey Shore. Of course we could ask these questions, if anyone is able to get a JCP&L person on the phone (or see a JCP&L crew working)? So, people can and should complain until JCP&L gives some real answers, and not the useless JCP&L web outage page.

Jonathan totally agree with you. It is the total lack of meaningful communication that is the most frustrating. We were told 7-10 days over last weekend. I was recently told that it is 7-10 days from the time your neighborhood was assessed. I have been assured that JCPL has completed their assessment in Morristown (not sure about Tsp or M.Plains). So depending on when that assessment was done in your neighborhood, if you know, add 7-10 days. I did speak to someone at JCPL, who although pleasant had no other information other than to say they hope to have most of Morristown restored in 7-10 days. No information on when certain areas would be restored. That would be helpful information for planning purposes. And the operative word may be MOST. Hope your power has since been restored.

I'm waiting to go home from work to see if I have power but I doubt it. I lost power on Monday and reported it immediately. Got a recorded call on Tuesday stating the work done in the area should mean I have electricity. HA! Same thing yesterday. HA! HA! All the streets around me have power but not Sherman Place. Hope I am wrong when I get home.

Also hoping for power back on Phoenix Ave when i get home from work today, but not getting my hopes up. I expected it to be bad, but it doesn't always make it easier to deal with. I think it sucks most of all driving through downtown, all bright and cheery, knowing my house is only 48 degrees inside and dark. Fingers crossed for everyone to get it back soon!

Well this is what the 3rd time without power? Nobody thought to buy a generator and gas cans since then? It sucks that I had to shell out $750 for a generator but I took some personal responsibility and bought a generator after storm number 1... And I filled up everything with gas last week before the storm. Probably something everyone needs like a lawnmower now. Just seems to be the times we are in now. keeps this in mind when this is all over. If you got money to burn buy a natural gas whole house gen and forget about the whole gasoline issue too! Stay warm and safe and if you have a gen share it..I'm partially powering 4 houses...next storm I'm doing my whole house and cutting them off!!

Powdermill heights apt complex has no power since Monday afternoon. About 300 residents live here with kids (about 300) ranging from infants to high schoolers. When is the power going to be restored. With no heating/ no bath/ rations are running low, it is testing the patience of everyone. Add no school to that. No word from JCPL yet except recorded message of 7 - 10 days to restore power. Is there anyone at JCPL really hearing the woes of residents?

You do realize that you are not the only ones without power, right? I do believe that JCPL and workers are doing their best to prioritize and repair service as quickly as possible. I do realize that it is frustrating but have you thought about the people down the shore that lost their houses - people with families that not only don't have electricity but have no place to live at all. We get so caught up with first world problems that we have that we forget that others have it much worse. I hope that they restore your power soon, but keep in mind that there are others that have it much worse. You will get power back and then in a few weeks you will forget that you spent a handful of days without, people that lost their homes will never forget.
