Redeemer Invites People to Shred for Lent

Interactive art project stationed outside South Street church.

Newly installed on front lawn is the Lenten Shredding Project, an interactive art installation just in time for Lent. The project invites members of the Morristown community to a time of reflection, whether or not they observe Lent.

"Lent is a time to look at that which separates us from a deeper experience of the 'holy' in our life," said the Rev. Cynthia Black, rector of Church of the Redeemer. "Using the contemporary symbol of a shredder, we can release that which keeps us from being all that God has called us to be."

Participants are encouraged to write their sorrows and shortcomings on repurposed/recycled paper, available at the booth, and then shred them to gain a sense of release from these negative thoughts and feelings. Hand cranking the paper notes through the shredder will also help to create a work of art, as the many-colored pages mingle together.

The project was constructed by church members Penny Rapicano, Marlowe Yonkers, Pat Hintz, Christopher Rapicano, George Ross and Linda Irwin.
