Keep Updated: Report Outages, Closures Around Morristown

Mainly, be safe!

We're all in this together.

All week, members of the Morristown, Morris Township and Morris Plains community have been helping us keep this post updated with info about how the oddball early winter storm's affecting our area.

The map above, charting power outages, was produced by Patch user Gwee and includes the most up-to-date info Gwee's been able to gather. Gwee's been pulling information from the hundreds of comments readers have been leaving on this post and elsewhere.

(Note: Some of the details on the map date back to Tropical Storm Irene, when Gwee first created the map, but with your updates, it's getting closer and closer to a real-time picture of how things are doing. So keep checking back on the map, and in the comments stream below, to see where power's out, and where it's back.)

So let us know in the comments how things are going by you and keep checking back on our front page for the latest from municipal officials and JCP&L.

I'm tired of hearing "you can only prepare so much" you know what if I ran my business way I'd be bankrupt. Jcpl and the township should be pooling resources instead they operate in silos. 5 trucks sat on Washington street for 2 hours, that's bad planning. We get 4-5 storms every year, be prepared and get it right. I'm just waiting to see my rates go up again.

This is the scary one:

https://firstenergycorp.com/content/dam/customer/get-help/files/County_ETR_Estimates_Oct30_1500.pdf

I am paying waaaay too much for a hotel next to the turnpike in Secaucus. But I have no office to go to and with electric heat, power, stove, water heater, I'm pretty f***ed. A non-commercial generator just can't power the the important/big stuff. Got down to 45 in the house last night. If you're thinking of a hotel, be ready for some serious hunting, I probably had to go a bit further since I needed to bring dogs, but it took quite a few hours to track this down. All 4 people I've run into here are here for the same reason - no power at home, no heat. Best of luck to all - it's cold out there!

Service rep this morning is only allowed to say "Majority back on by Thurs eve, everyone by Friday".....doesn't sound hopeful. Still a sub-station issue too. Morris Cty was supposed to be down to 85k out by midnight last night and this AM they are still showing 95k out, so they are behind in their published estimates. At least the weather is moderating for the rest of the week.

Lidgerwood Parkway and Paula Ct. in Morristown are without power. Believe Erskine and Maxwell in Morristown do have power.
When I left Lidgerwood Pkwy area there were several JCPL trucks working.

JCPL needs to fix this, I'm sure they have the money. And if they don't have the resources, there are alot of folks looking for jobs

Please add Watnong Drive in Morris Plains to the list. We are one of 6 houses between Madison and Cleveland that have had no power since Saturday at 2 pm. It came on briefly at 2:30 am Sunday morning and went out about 20 minutes later. Every house around us (except for these 6) has had power back since yesterday. I've seen two JCP&L trucks stop, look, and immediately leave. No wires are down anywhere near us, so I don't understand what's going on!

Got a call from JCP&L today, a live person wanting to know if my power was on. I told her "no" and noted that there's a limb down on the line running to a transformer that services 3 homes. She seemed to be noting this, but would not venture a guess at restoral time.

Any word about the area on James St. like Bell Drive, or the condos (Sherwood, Nottingham, Windmill) in that area? Those folks and I are on the same "circuit". Once those are running I just need to wait on a fix for that downed tree limb.

Really want out of the hotel. Would be nice to be able to plan a bit.

For those of you without power. Make sure you call JCPL to report the outage. Don't assume that your neighbors called or that JCPL knows that you are without power. They restore based on number of people they can get back so if they think you are the only one without power you are at the bottom of the list. This is esp. important if everyone around you has power. JCPL may have fixed something thinking it helped everyone. They need to know if you are still without. The number to call is 888-544-4877. If you think your neighbors haven't or can't call report for them as well.

I am out of patience! Yes, this is our second "freak" storm, but why do I (Western and Rolling Hill) have to be near the last again to get power back! The governor's power in Mendham was restored, why not me! I don't see that JCP&L is doing anything different from the last time. Just chugging away and gradually working on things. Is this a third world country? Every time we have a storm, we're going to be without power for a week? Everyone is acting like this is the new normal. We deserve better!

Altamont Court is still out of power. I called Monday morning and the power company said we had power - NOT! When the survey crews came by the street last night they assumed our house had power because they saw a lamp lit in our living room. It was being powered off my car. They did not knock on our door to ask because the crew guy said he was only dispatched to check out my neighbor's house. Keep calling...

Rolling hill still without power. And the reason for all of this is because of unions telling the government how they will handle the situation not vice versa. Welcome to socialism. Get use to it if u voted for "change" aka marxism and redistribution of wealth. If we were Greece we'd not only be frozen to death we'd be starved. Good time to spend with family. I liked the report on Friday that JCPL was getting ready for the storm and should be better prepared. I guess they don't know how to prepare. Seems like Altamont Ct. and Elm St. are the last to get power. During the hurricane we were down from Sunday to Friday. Hope this doesn't happen again. I am really hoping to have power back by Thursday. That's sad I am hoping for Thursday. My wife just had surgery and got home from a week in the hospital to come home to this? If 100% restored service isn't until Friday, that's three more long & cold nights.

JCP&L's list is very inaccurate. There are numerous streets without power that are not listed - Upper Field Road, Rolling Hill Drive, Brigade Hill Road, etc. This list is just a smokescreen to pacify people for the moment. There are many streets on the list with reported restoration dates that have passed without any action. Some streets are listed with only one home out when the entire block is out. There are lines down in the streets. We haven't seen a JCP&L truck all week. Again, as with Irene, we are receiving calls from JCP&L telling us our power has been restored. They sound very surprised when we tell them they are incorrect. JCP&L - get representatives out in the streets to assess the damage, and communicate with your customers. YOU CANNOT COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR CUSTOMERS BY PHONE, ON THE WEB OR BY EMAIL WHEN THET DON"T HAVE POWER. The main reason for is that the parent company, First Energy, has cut back staff to make a buck. The entire NJ office is understaffed and under trained. Out of state customer service does not work. Our state politicians should revaluate JCP&L's commitment to New Jersey.

Upper Field Road, Dorothy Drive, Fairmont Avenue and Grace Way still out. The downed wires are still in the same place as they were on Saturday. Luckily our Township Police and Fire Departments have graciously marked them for you. JCP&L, my bill always arrives at my house on time every month. The mailbox still works in a power outage, and a knock on the door can be heard in the silence of our neighborhood. How about communicating to your customers with a flyer, street representatives, a customer service station here or there? This lack of direct communication is deplorable. It is simple customer service 101. Be proactive, talk to your customers directly, bring out hot chocolate, coffee, water bottles, flashlights, batteries, ski hats, gloves, etc. (even branded with your logo) A little customer service now will go a long way when the bashing starts. A couple of dollars now will save you quite a bit down the road. Hiding behind the fallen tree branches is a cowardly act. And don't even think of estimating our bills this month like the last time (Irene). We would all like the exact usage on our next bill.

Thanks everyone for their kind support of my little google maps project. I did notice that some shapes appear to be missing. I have set the map to open collaborations so that anyone with a google account can add comments and changes. Please feel free to update the map but please do not delete anything.

It appears that our grid is not very stable and the map might be a good record of areas that are particularly succeptible to power outages.

https://www.firstenergycorp.com/content/dam/customer/get-help/files/Town_ETR_Estimates_Nov3_1130_explanationadded.pdf

That chart now shows Nov. 5 as the date for full restoration.

PSE&G has more subs yet has consistently had a greater percentage restored. Just throwing that out there...

Should I feel special that I'm one of the 693 in Morristown without power? :)

Big ups to my neighbors in the Sherwood/Nottingham condos and the tennis club, both of which seem to share my fate. Visited my place today, and damn it was cold in there. Tons of homes and condos around this area have been up for days. Line and tree work looks complete, maybe we're just waiting on someone to pop a new fuse in, who knows. Didn't say any trucks in my quick drive through town.

Heading back home tomorrow anyhow, as this hotel is getting expensive and they're out of rooms tomorrow.

Blah.

The Business Journals
Date: Wednesday, November 2, 2011, 4:40am EDT

FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE:FE) nearly tripled its third-quarter earnings compared to a year ago thanks to higher sales margins and the company's acquisition of Greensburg, Penn.-based Allegheny Energy, the Akron Beacon Journal reports. The Akron-based parent company of Ohio Edison reported third-quarter earnings of $509 million, or $1.22 a share, compared to $175 million, or 59 cents a share, last year, the newspaper reports. Revenues increased by $1 billion to $4.7 billion, buoyed by the Allegheny Energy acquisition.

7 days and 2 hours, Janie. :)

I filed my BPU complaint Friday from my hotel room, also contacted the governor's office for good measure. I focussed less on my woes and more on how the state needs to pressure JCP&L to do much more proactive maintenance to help prevent this sort of thing.

BTW, our outage (and I'd like to contact you at some point so I have a "power buddy" on the same grid who can report whether they've got power or not) was apparently due to that tree that fell across James down by Loyola and the racquet club. There are 4 lines. Apparently they missed one when they fixed the larger mess on Sunday(?). If they would have dealt with the whole thing at once we would have been back up when the rest of the neighborhood came back. Shockingly bad organization on someone's part.
