Video: 'Patch Takes It Off,' Crosstraining
Our athletic endeavors head to Central Park of Morris County.
I remember a fun comment from a student in the application materials for Western Maryland College when asked about her fondness for running.
"I only run when chased."
I could not agree with her more. However, I also have tried to dissolve my phobia for running, as doing so can only help toward my fitness goals. The best athletes cross-train, no? Yes.
That was why I skipped this week's Beginner's Bike Ride from Macculloch Avenue and headed to Central Park of Morris County, where the NJ Trail Series holds weekly 5K (three-mile) runs starting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Kendra Arnold, Bike & Walk Morristown founder and friend of Patch, insisted on the awesomeness of the weekly event. Who am I to argue with her?
Founded by Jennifer McNulty, the NJ Trail Series holds events throughout the state, with the Central Park weekly run a more relaxed, all-inclusive run for all athletic abilities, according to organizer Rick McNulty, Jennifer's husband.
Despite the heat, a brief rain and my general lack of running acumen (except, yes, when chased), the 5K was a fun time. And, if it can help me train to get through those nasty Morris County hills in the Gran Fondo NJ on Aug. 28, all the better. I'm still chasing that dream.
