Whole Foods Coming to Morristown

Texas-based company announced they will move into space currently occupied by A&P on Washington Street sometime in 2014, 2015.

For those looking for their Whole Foods Market fix that don't want to go to Madison or the one recently announced for Parsippany, your prayers have been answered.

Well, they will be a year or two from now.

During the Austin, Texas-based company's quarterly earnings call Wednesday, it was announced that, among a slate of new store openings, a Morristown location was planned for a 2014, 2015 opening in the space currently occupied by A&P on Washington Street.

A&P will retain the space until the end of 2013, said Michael Sinatra, a Whole Foods Market Northeast Public Relations representative. "It's still their space, they're still operating a store there."

For now.

"We have signed a lease saying that we will be utilizing the property," Sinatra said. "We have committed to it and as soon as we can take over, we will. We have long heard from that community that they wanted a Whole Foods nearby. We are excited to be coming a little closer to home."

Patch will provide updates as they become available.

I would have preferred Trader Joe's but Whole Foods will be welcomed.

A&P had a golden opportunity to upgrade their store and become a competitive enterprise . Morristown and Mendham shoppers needed another option to King's. "They could have been a contender"

That will be one tiny whole foods unless they tear down and build a multi-story building. Love the idea but wish they would grab a bigger space

@maryann. Why do some people always have to be Debbie Downer. This is great news and will benefit so many consumers let alone create some more jobs in town. I would love if they acquire A&P liquor license. Madison carried some great selections of wine and beer before they had to give up their license

Don't say "Debbie Downer". I'm thrilled about the news, but the truth is that Trader Joe's offers good things at better prices than Whole Foods.

Does this mean that all A&P/Pathmarks will close or be sold? Rumors are that current A&P honcho Ron Burkle will take control of Supervalu's Acme and Shaws (Star) divisions soon in the Northeast; therefore he must unload all current A&P banners to satisfy Obama controlled FTC.

A&P just emerged from bankruptcy, why would you think they would close all of the A&Ps? And, do you have any specifics on why they would have to "unload" A&P "banners" to satisfy the FTC's requirements?

P.S. Whole Foods is a ripp-off. Many identical items can be purchased at a traditional market much cheaper. Most "365" private label items are packed by the same packers who supply us. There are many tricks in private label, be careful!! For the best deals, please shop at Food Basics USA in Brooklyn. Thank you

Sam, you very crazy person, no one is going to travel from Morristown, NJ to Brooklyn for groceries unless you can guarantee that stuff at Food Basics is, like, free!

Sad to read the A&P will be closing. Have been shopping there since 1979 !

I am thrilled - I wish they were coming sooner - A&P could have made a go of it but it has gone down hill and even though it is the closest food store around I have not been there for years!

I don't have a problem with a Whole Foods in town but I do have a problem with them replacing the A&P. Can't they find another space? What about all that empty retail space in the Epstein's (40 Park) building? Not everyone in town is able to afford King's prices and Whole Foods will be more expensive. The only other grocery store in town is The Morris Gourmet Farms market behind Staples...they have a decent selection and it's a great store for fish and produce, but they don't carry many of the national brands or have the sales and specials that a supermarket does. It's a real shame that there will be less affordable food within walking distance.

I don't agree it's a great idea at AT ALL.  Morristown needs a market the average person can afford--not another high-priced, over-priced market.  I won't be able to shop there, and I frequent the A&P at least 3 times a week.  Bad move, and I am sure I am not alone with my opinion!

Agree! A&P is a good basic store with good prices that people can actually afford! Whole foods is expensive and will probably drive away Grassroots which is scheduled to open in the old Health Shoppe space. I will miss the A&P!

Or you can support local owned Grassroots Market filling the hole that was the old Health Shoppe. Judging by the one in Denville this one should be really nice.

What are the prices like at Grassroots for the usual staples? Are they competitive with spring water, say? What about the dairy section? A&P isn't cheap, but they have things like buttermilk, breakstones products, etc. I don't have a car and live in an area where I can walk to the A&P and Rite Aid easily, but the old Health Shoppe area would be within walking distance too.

p.s. i dont even shop at wholefoods except to get a few things the cheaper markets have. if you shop at a&p why would you switch completely to whole foods. theyre two different things for the most part.

Bummer, I'll live right up the hill from the most expensive grocery store around. But I do second the notion that they pick up the A&P staff, they are gems. I just hope Wholefoods treats them better than A&P has.

WF prices are much higher than A&P. Where will the lower income people shop?

I wouldn't concern myself with Morristown's low-income people. Eventually Morristown's liberal, white racists will force all of them out of town.

A&P is disgusting anyway. Rotten meat and produce are a regular occurrence and the store is dirty.

What would be great -- a Wegmans, though I think I heard they're finally coming to north jersey? Better than whole foods and at Shoprite prices.

that's true! there will be one in Parsippany over near campus drive - it's a hike, but it may be worth it, and closer than the Trader Joe's in Florham Pk!

For those that are concerned about price, there is still the Foodtown in the Walmart plaza in Cedar Knolls...

Foodtown is priced right, but not exactly within walking distance. Morristown keeps losing grocery stores. The Grand Union closed in `79. This was near the corner of South & Elm. It became a Merrill Lynch office and now appears to be a medical plaza, This is behind the Swiss Chalet Bakery building. Then the Shop Rite by the train station took off somewhere in the `90`s. It became the Staples. And now the A&P. What`s a poor boy to do ?

According to Staples their Morristown store opened in July of 2000. I would have said it was earlier than that. Maybe it was empty for a while after the Shop Rite departed, I don`t recall. Went to that Shop Rite hundreds of times.

As a realtor, it occurs to me that instead of focusing on the higher prices Whole Foods will charge compared to the A&P, the homeowners in the neighborhood should look at the positives. They will experience an increase in the values of their homes because of the proximity to an upscale supermarket.

Karen, are you a fool?? If the value of our homes increases, the tub of lard in Trenton, who calls himself the "governator", will surely raise our rateables, you know-it-all!!! We want a WalMart is this here town!!

Too bad a lot of us who can't or won't shop there will be too hungry to care about the value of our real estate as we spend all our money on gas driving to a supermarket in a neighboring town!

I have never shopped a store with so much fresh food and the nicest people. The prepared food is delicious and without all the chemicals and additives. The 365 brand is competitive in pricing and the nutrition is better than most brands. Can't wait to have them close by!
