Submitted by Cher Costea, skater with the Jerzey Derby Brigade
Every Sunday after practice I go grocery shopping. Although the specials are usually on spare ribs or chicken thighs, all eyes always seem to be on me. Is it my choice of red delicious over Granny Smith apples that are making heads turn? Did I accidentally pick the shopping cart with the squeaky wheel (I know that annoys you, admit it)? Oh wait….yep. I’m pretty sure it’s that I’m wearing my Sunday best: fishnets, a tutu, and a shirt that reads “I like it Derby.”
I play roller derby, then I go grocery shopping. All the cashiers know my name, and the bakery expert always saves me the last loaf of Pumpernickel. Those people who stare at the end of the dairy aisle: I will have convinced them to come check out the next bout. I will share my coupons with them, which will have directions to our skating rink on the back. I will let them get in front of me at the deli counter after I tell them about the community service our team just completed. By the time they get asked "paper or plastic," I can almost guarantee, that they will have told their friend/husband/wife/neighbor about me. That’s my goal every Sunday.
Most people that I talk to don’t even know roller derby exists in Morristown. The Jerzey Derby Brigade wants to change that. Scattered throughout Morristown/Morris County/Northern New Jersey, there are over 50 of us who will make you a believer/a fan/a player, all while running one errand at a time. I personally will do it while grocery shopping.
The Jerzey Derby Brigade…we do exist. Right here in Morristown. Meet us on Aug. 4th during our annual kickball tournament at Sunrise Lake, Morris Township! Click here for event details.
Cheer us on Sept. 8 and Sept. 22 when we return to Inline Morristown for two epic battles in one month! After the bout I’ll even share my meatloaf secrets with you.
