On Sunday May 20, 2012 at 6:30pm Ogden Memorial Presbyterian Church, 286 Main Street, Chatham, NJ will be hosting an educational program, Human Trafficking: Why it Concerns Us. The purpose of this program is to help local residents understand the nature of the problem and learn how to address the concern locally as well as nationally. The injustice of human trafficking knows no bounds: it affects people of every age, race, religion, gender, ethnicity, nationality, and socioeconomic background. This problem exists right here in New Jersey and it is considered to be one of the fastest growing criminal industries in the world.
Human trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, abduction, fraud, deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability, for the purpose of exploiting them. Over 900,000 people in the United States became victims of this crime last year. And each year, approximately 300,000 American children are forced into slavery. Major forms of trafficking include Forced Labor, Bonded Labor, Debt Bondage among Migrant Laborers, Involuntary Domestic Servitude, Forced Child Labor, Child Soldiers, and Child Sex Trafficking.
The HTA Council, http://www.htacouncil.org/, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established to raise awareness on human trafficking through education, support, and advocacy. HTA Council is an organization that not only educates the masses about the reality of Human Trafficking, but also empowers citizens to take action at the local level to prevent it from occurring in their communities.
This event is free; however donations to the program will be gladly accepted. We encourage everyone to come learn more about Human Trafficking and how you can become a part of the change.
