MORRISTOWN, N.J. - Harmonium Choral Society, led by
Artistic Director Dr. Anne J. Matlack, announces its 35th season concert
program. The 100-voice chorus's 2013-2014 concert season consists of three
major concerts in December, March and June, as well as an additional
performance by the select Harmonium Chamber Singers in April. Each concert
provides an opportunity for audiences to hear old and new choral selections
from many different styles and eras. The chorus will feature music from around
the world as well as new choral commissions from New Jersey-based
composers-in-residence Mark Miller and Martin A. Sedek.
The Harmonium concert season begins in December with "Alleluya, A New Work" featuring world premieres by Sedek and Miller, and works by Mathias, Britten, Verdi, Brahms, Papoulis and more. Adrienne Blossey, oboe, and organist Joseph Arndt, as well as a joyful ensemble of drums and handbells, will accompany the chorus. The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, December 7, 2013 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday, December 8, 2013 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Morristown, N.J.
In March Harmonium presents "The Song Within" featuring "Annelies," a major new cantata about Anne Frank by James Whitbourn. "Annelies" will be accompanied by violin, cello, clarinet, piano and enhanced with a multimedia presentation. The concert will be held 8 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2014 and 3 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 2014 at the United Methodist Church, Morristown, N.J. Discounted tickets will be available for school groups.
For the first time ever, the Harmonium Chamber Singers will be included in the chorus's season subscription series. They will perform a full concert of works ranging from Palestrina to Parker, from deeply spiritual to rather silly, in a concert titled "Body Parts Sacred and Profane." The concert will be 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Grace Episcopal Church, Madison, N.J.
The Harmonium Spring Concert "Sing a New Song" takes place 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 7, 2014 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 8, 2014 at Grace Episcopal Church, Madison, N.J. The concert features the Bach motet "Singet dem Herrn" and an eclectic selection of works about singing, including those by the winners of the 17th Annual High School Student Choral Composition Contest.
