THE CULTURE OF MISSIONS
Dr. Morris L. Davis
Dr. Davis will discuss the origins of the Protestant missions movement and how it became distinct from the regular practice of Christianity. We will move from the 16th century era of reform and concentrate on the 19th and early 20th centuries, during which missions became a central focus of Protestant church life. We will explore not only the institutional history of missions, but the culture of missions itself, its larger place in American life, and the ways in which missions have changed not only those to whom missionaries were sent, but those back home who sent them.
