Morristown Soup Kitchen to Host Health, Nutrition Program for Kids

Program made possible via $30,000 grant from Walmart Foundation.

September kicks off National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. To bring attention to this issue, the Community Soup Kitchen and Outreach Center in Morristown is giving back to the area kids by hosting a “Growing Healthy Kids” program.

This free program will offer children of local working families an opportunity to learn about the benefits and importance of nutritious eating through interactive games and activities, according to the Soup Kitchen.

The program is on Wednesday from 10 – 11:30 a.m. and is made possible through a $30,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation.

The event includes a healthy meal and healthy take-away snacks provided by Walmart. The program will cover healthy lifestyle habits, including healthy eating and physical activity.

The grant from Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program will help the Soup Kitchen keep its doors open 365 days a year and “feed hundreds of our local neighbors who need a hot meal and help getting back on their feet,” said the Soup Kitchen.

One in three children in the U.S. is overweight or obese and childhood obesity puts kids at risk for health problems that were once seen only in adults, like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease, according to a press release from the Soup Kitchen, adding that limited access to healthy foods – which are more costly – is one factor which has led to increased obesity in our youth.
