Morristown Silent March for Newtown Victims Sunday

Call to action to bring awareness to gun violence since the Sandy Hook tragedy, with a pair of shoes for each life lost.

Since the  towns, counties and states have debated gun control and gun violence. Recently, Morristown Town Council discussed and decided to table a gun resolution until more research can be done and until the state reaches a firmer stance on the issue.

In the meantime, locals are stepping up to raise awareness. The Morris Area Committee to Reduce Gun Violence, based in Morristown, is organizing an event this Sunday: Silent March of 68 pairs of shoes.

"This is not just a memorial, but a call to action in the interest of saving lives in New Jersey and across America," according to its Facebook event listing. "There will be one pair of shoes for every New Jersey resident lost to gun violence since Newtown, including 6-year-old Brandon Holt of Toms River." Holt died after being shot by a 4-year-old with a rifle earlier this week.

The public promenade will begin at 9 a.m. on South Street across from Miller Road in Morristown.

The purpose of this nonpartisan group is to enable a large, diverse group of Morris-area residents to plan and carry out activities designed to press national and state legislators to adopt commonsense measures to reduce gun violence.

"Come, bring your friends, help us educate the public and honor all those killed by guns in New Jersey since Sandy Hook School."

"Silent March, founded in 1994, is a NY-based nonprofit organization that collects and displays empty shoes, many belonging to gun victims, to advocate for common sense regulation of firearms," said the organization. "The Silent March is a long existing action and we just want to make sure the media understands that.  More info can be found at silentmarch.org."
