Child Struck By Car at Morristown Green 'Flew Into The Air'
'I thought she must have been killed,' witness said.
An "extremely lucky" 7-year-old girl from Morris Plains was struck by a car while visiting the Christmas display on the Green Saturday and escaped with only minor injuries, Morristown Police said.
According to Lt. Stuart Greer, the family was crossing South Park Place around 1 p.m. heading over to the Green when a truck stopped to let them cross.
"The little girl stepped into the next lane where she was struck by a car," Greer said. "It appears that the stopped truck blocked the other driver's view of her and he did not have time to stop."
A witness, who asked for her name to be withheld, said the father was putting out his hand to stop traffic while the mother of the little girl yelled to him that they weren't at a crosswalk.
"The mom decided to go and so did I. I was almost at the curb on the other side when I looked back and saw the car hit her," the witness said. "She flew into the air. I thought she must have been killed."
According to Greer, the investigation showed that the driver of the vehicle was within the speed limit and properly in his lane and the family was crossing in mid-block and was not in a designated crosswalk. Based upon those facts, the driver was determined not to be at fault in this incident, Greer said.
"The little girl was extremely lucky and I'm being told that she only received minor injuries," Greer said. "She was treated and transported to the ER at Morristown Medical Center as a precaution."
