Empty CUPS Could Mean a Full Bar on South Street

Landlord to bring restaurant proposal to council, ask for extended bar hours, report says.

Opened in March 2012, CUPS was a self-serve frozen yogurt destination billed as a place for kids. The corporate-run business shut its doors last week due to weak sales.

In its absence, Iron Bar landlord Jimmy Cavanaugh is hoping his proposed Gran Cantina Mexican restaurant into the 2,100 square-foot space left vacant by the frozen yogurt business, creating a larger business, according to morristowngreen.com.

Morristown’s Mayor and Council have approved Cavanaugh’s request to extend Iron Bar’s liquor license next door for the proposed Mexican eatery under the condition bar sales end at 11 p.m., the report said. The council contended that downtown was already flushed with young bar patrons when considering the extension.

Cavanaugh told the website he intends to approach the council again with the intention of asking they drop the 11 p.m. cutoff time, the report said.

What do you think? Does Morristown need another bar? Would you be ok with the new bar if it stopped serving at 11 p.m.?

I still don't believe how there is no limit on the size of an establishment per each liquor license. If our council keeps approving these expansions, the size of a proposed bar is limitless!

I would like a restaurant that serves alcohol until 11. If I want to drink after that, then I'll go to one of the 6 on that block.

Yesterday I posted something regarding this matter under the "Conversations" tab under Boards/Speak Out. I attached a PDF of an article that quotes Jimmy Cavanaugh saying he was approached by a methadone clinic to occupy the Cups space. Now wouldn't that be a great addition to our town? Roots, Urban Table and AT&T would surely welcome a meth clinic as would the hefty tax payers that live at 40 Park. This man is despicable and will stop at nothing to get his next liquor license!! Please check out my comments under that section.

Jimmy's "Girls Gone Wild" night was awesome!!! Bring it back you dirty old man! Who cares about Historic Morristown? That S#*t was so long ago.

Pretty funny the people who purchased homes at 40 Park didn't notice the seven bars within 500ft? Makes sense. They overpaid for their apartments by 150-250k. Nightlife is part of the town. Get over it.

It's not about the bars in town. It's about Jimmy Cavanaugh's comment stating he was approached by a methadone clinic to occupy the Cups space. He said he declined as he did not want that in the downtown area. Scare tactic??? NOOOOOOOOO, my mistake. Thanks Jimmy, you're swell.

Sounds like Jimmy is looking out for you and the other residents at 40 Park to me.

I hope Cups is replaced by a crossfit-type gym, pizzeria or another fro-yo shop, but not a methadone clinic.
