Everything Old To Be New Again at Morristown Movie Theater

Movie renovations set to begin in early 2014.

The automatic ticket dispensers aren’t functioning, the seats are still careworn and uncomfortable and the speakers still sound blown out at big moments but the movies are back in Morristown and that is enough—for now.

Patrons were thrilled to return to their familiar haunt when they re-opened in Headquarters Plaza nearly a month ago and many, like Morristown Mayor Tim Dougherty, are looking forward to the anticipated renovations.

“I’m looking forward to the renovations and the upgrades,” Dougherty said. “But it was nice to walk a few blocks and go to the movies and not have to drive out to Parsippany. Not that I have a problem with Parsippany, but I would rather spend money in my own town and support our business rather than supporting theirs.”

AMC director of Public Relations Ryan Noonan said that renovations are on track for early 2014 and should be completed by spring of 2014.

The plan to renovate the theater (auditoriums, concession stand, etc.) in phases is to ensure guests can still come see new releases coming to the big screen during the next few months. Noonan said the upgrades planned that will make patrons pleased.

"While not an AMC Dine-In Theatres location, we think guests will be amazed by the renovations when they’re complete," Noonan said. "We’ll be installing the most comfortable power recliners imaginable, and providing an improved concession experience."

New menu items will include favorite traditional concessions like popcorn and candy, along with items like chicken tenders, mozzarella sticks, French fries, jalapeño poppers, pizza and Coca-Cola Freestyle. But the theater equipment itself will also be getting a major overhaul.

"We’ll be renovating the sight and sound presentation aspects in the auditoriums, and putting up fresh paint, new carpet, and renovating the restrooms," Noonan said.

For his part, Dougherty was just as pleased to see Eric “Fluffy” Glover ripping tickets again with his trademark flair as he was to see the theater back in business.

“It is good to be back,” Glover said. “I am happy to be here.”
