Former Giant Mark Bavaro to Make Local Appearance

Bavaro is a former tight end for the New York Giants, and a former resident of Chatham.

Mark Bavaro, a former New York Giant and Chatham resident, will sign autographs and take pictures with fans at Legends Gallery from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2.

Advance tickets, including an item for Bavaro to autograph, is $50. An 8-x-10 in. copy of the cover of Sports Illustrated's Dec. 15, 1986 edition, which features Bavaro on the cover, is $55.

Legends has also hosted several other Giants in past months, including Eli Manning in September, Jason Pierre-Paul in July and Victor Cruz in March.

Wow. Lots of bitterness, people. He was a Chatham resident. That makes it a little interesting to some. It is not as though they did this for every celebrity appearance at the store. I was interested that he was coming- he was a good neighbor. ANd if you do not know who he is, you are not a Giant fan, so you have no idea.

Mark Bavaro used to go to Mass at St. Patrick's everyday before practice, unshowered and scruffy. The nuns thought that he must be homeless, and would pray for him, looking the way he did.

How sad that the good old days when sports "heroes" would be happy to sign autographs for young fans - at NO charge - to encourage them in their love of the sport are gone forever; and that players who earn huge salaries (I don't know anything, of course, about this particular player's finances) feel they have to scrape even more by selling themselves to the fans.
