Upscale Restaurant Closer to Opening Doors

Veronica's moves forward while Cambridge Wines hits a stumbling block.

Expect an upscale American dining experience to come this fall to Speedwell Avenue.

Brian Walsh is looking forward to opening his restaurant Veronica’s at 34B-36 Speedwell Avenue, hopefully around October, he said.

The Morristown town council pushed his establishment’s progress forward with their stamp of approval on Tuesday night.

“It feels great. I’m excited about it. It’s going to be a fun place and will open up that area of town,” said Walsh. “Hopefully this will be a staple for Morristown.”

The resolution for the place-to-place license transfer for Uncle Baxter/Walsh’s business was approved 6-0, with Councilwoman Michelle Dupree Harris absent.

Approval was based on Walsh agreeing to three conditions:

  • “All liquor licenses transfers are subject to zoning. One of the conditions is that they are subject to any approvals required by the town, whether it’s a site plan by the planning board," town Attorney Vijayant Pawar said.
  • “Approval is based on the representation made by the applicant in the application sketch that was provided to the council."
  • Basements will not be used as public space.

“Councilwoman (Raline) Smith-Reid, Councilman (Stefan) Armington and I did a site visit … so that we have a sense of what we’re approving,” said Councilwoman Rebecca Feldman. “One of the things I wanted to stress, included in this application is a floor plan and layout. During the visit the applicant was clear the amount of bar, seating length of the bar, the number of tables and chairs, (etc…) will basically hold to this concept plan.”

Wine Store License Rescinded, Passed Again With Conditions

While Veronica's moves forward, another Morristown business hit a slight stumbling block.

Council recently transferred a liquor license to Cambridge Wines since required the governing body to rescind the approval.

“We had not received the division of taxation transfer clearance, which is a requirement for the transfer to have taken place. Since that had not been received, the ABC board has requested that this prior resolution be negated,” said Morristown Clerk Matthew Stechauner.

“We still don’t have the tax clearance letter,” said Vijayant Pawar, municipal attorney. “I understand there are time constraints … my recommendation is to make it subject to receiving the tax clearance letter prior to the next meeting.”

Councilwoman Alison Deeb agreed, asking that the resolutions be approved pending receipt of the tax clearance letter prior to the next meeting.

Resolutions 115 and 121 were bundled and passed.

Resolution 115 rescinds the person to person and place to place transfer for Cambridge Wines Cellars and Resolution 121 approves this license transfer.
