Swiss Chalet Bakery to Quadruple in Size at New Location

8,000 square foot location, at 155 South St., set to open in January.

Another Morristown business icon is closing its doors.

But, unlike Hennessey's Washington Bar, whose owner has sold his business and is in the process of transferring ownership, Swiss Chalet Bakery is just moving—across the street.

At 155 South St., home to the former business offices of a glove manufactuer that closed last year, Swiss Chalet will be expanding from 2,220 to 8,000 square feet, said co-owner Bill Moran.

Work at the new location is about 75 percent complete, Moran said. A tentative opening is set for Jan. 15, with plans for a Grand Opening celebration to follow.

This move has been needed for a long, long time.

Any regulars to Swiss Chalet Bakery can tell you its location is cozy—which is code for cramped.

The Morristown landmark has called its current space at the corner of South and Elm streets home since 1940. It's only expansion, doubling its size to its present 2,200 square feet, came later.

"It's been a long time coming," said Moran, who bought the business he had patronized for nearly two decades in 2000 when the previous owner was unable to find a buyer.

Under the control of Moran and business partner Angelo Sciortino, Swiss Chalet Bakery has continued to thrive. When 155 South St., the "Magla" building opened up last year, Moran said he knew it was an opportunity he couldn't pass up.

"We just ran out of space where we are now," said Moran, a commercial and residential real estate manager. "It's a huge difference. We were so jammed in in the other place. Different departments didn't have room. It was difficult to work under those conditions."

At quadruple the space the business is in now, that likely won't be an issue. And, given the additional space, Swiss Chalet Bakery's new location will have an additional cafe area for items like soup and sandwiches, adding savory to the sweet they've long been known for.
