Bicycles, How Do We Love You?

Let us count the ways.

It is that time of the month again.

The time when all manner of folks descend upon the Town Hall parking lot at 6:30 p.m. to gather in a showing of unity and love ... of bikes.

Yes, friends, it's "Community Bike Ride" time again! Or, if you prefer, "Critical Mass" bike ride time again. Either one is acceptable.

While was Morristown Patch's first foray into this monthly community endeavor, it is by far not the first time those beautiful creatures on two wheels (and, we're not talking about the  Derby girls, they have eight) have graced this site's virtual pages. So, in honor of the monthly ride (followed tonight by the ), we present some of our other cyclical jaunts in Morristown Patch's nine-month history.

  1. You Need to Know About 'Cruiseday Tuesday:' Kendra Arnold, the matron saint of all that is Bike Morristown, first came to our consciousness way back in September (an age ago in Patch time) during her "Bike-O-Rama" weeklong celebration. On Tuesday of that week, she invited folks to come out to ride to some fun tunes of yesteryear, as if we all were driving '57 Chevys on the way to the sock-hop. And, nothing was ever the same.
  2. You Need to Know About 'Art of the Bicycle:' That weeklong celebration of the bike concluded with "Art of the Bicycle," at Marty's Reliable Cycle, a place I barely knew of back then. Oh, how times have changed.
  3. You Need to Know About How This Website Began: While there is no photographic or video evidence of this, it was actually upon our Giant OCR1 road bike that much of the Directory (now dubbed "Places") was solidified in the weeks prior to Morristown Patch's launch. Back when the other side of town seemed like a completely different world, it was the bike that brought it closer and closer into reality.
  4. You Need to Know About How Some Stories Got Covered: Councilwoman Rebecca Feldman once saw us riding down Macculloch Avenue as we headed for a story. Riding the bike? Good. But, we had forgotten to wear our helmet, which she was more than happy to chastise us for. Later on, while investigating a report of an explosion outside (which thankfully, turned out to be just a transformer problem under the street), we thought of that first time and promptly grabbed the helmet before riding over. Thanks, Councilwoman Feldman.
  5. You Need to Know About the Just this week, we got to ride shotgun in a new Chevy Volt electric car, as part of Marty Reliable Cycle and TransOptions' "Commuter Challenge," pitting electric cars against bicyclists against bicyclists that also take trains. Who won out? Who cares, everyone had a great time!
