Formal Welcome for new Rector Among September Events at Redeemer

It has been a busy summer for South Street Episcopal Church.

The Church of the Redeemer was busy this summer, welcoming its 16th rector, among other activities and events. September will be no different, with the formal welcome for the Rev. Cynthia L. Black and more. A press release is below:

While many churches may experience something of a slowdown during summer months, the , Morristown, has been active with the business of welcoming a new rector and extensive building projects.

After two years of transitional leadership, on June 26 the parish welcomed its 16th rector, the Rev. Cynthia L. Black, D.D. Several suppers with the new rector were held during the summer months to allow members to get to know their new priest on a more informal basis. A Celebration of New Ministry will be held on Thursday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. to welcome Dr. Black formally as the new rector. The Right Rev. Mark M. Beckwith, Bishop of Newark, will preside and the choir will sing music commissioned for the occasion.

Recently the Church of the Redeemer has undertaken a series of projects designed to preserve and enhance the buildings and grounds, using funds raised by the church's successful capital campaign, and generously supplemented by matching grants from the Morris County Historic Preservation Trust and the Community Development Block Grant Association. In order to be more welcoming and inclusive of persons with disabilities, a wheelchair accessible bathroom was installed on the main level of the church.

To maintain the structural integrity of the buildings and grounds' bluestone walkways, steps and landings were replaced on the parish house and new energy efficient windows were installed in the auditorium to help Redeemer be environmentally responsible. The roof over the entrance of the church was also replaced along with restorative work to the interior of the entrance and its doors. These projects are part of an overall preservation plan in three phases, which will preserve the structural and historic integrity of Redeemer's buildings, and help ensure that the church continues to live out its mission of service to those in need in the community.

A full schedule of special services and social justice events lies ahead. On Sunday, Sept. 25, the Church of the Redeemer will celebrate its fifth anniversary as a peace site with a service of rededication. On Sunday, Oct. 2, a blessing of the animals will be offered at the 10:30 a.m. service. All are welcome to attend these and all Redeemer events.
