Pippi's Got Long Stockings, and You Have Many Options for the Kids

Check out what events you and the kids can enjoy this week.

Every week, Patch brings a listing of the best events to "Grab the Kids & Go" see and experience. This week, we have everything from Pippi Longstocking at The Community Theatre, to Dr. Seuss Storytime at Barnes & Noble, to Morris Museum's presentation of classic cartoons the way they were meant to be enjoyed–on the big screen.

“Pippi Longstocking” Performance
Where/When: At the Community Theatre in Morristown on Sunday, March 6 at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
Why Go: Because many children love Pippi Longstocking, and many also love musicals. This has both! For ages 5 or older.

Dr. Suess Storytime
Where/When: 10 a.m. at Barnes & Noble in Morris Plains on Thursday, March 3
Why Go: Because parents can reminisce while introducing their children to a classic children’s author.
Pricing: Free

Where/When: Thursday, March 3 at 6 p.m. and Friday and Saturday March 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m. at 
Why Go: “Guys & Dolls” won six Tony Awards on Broadway and there are three chances for families to enjoy the play in Chatham this weekend.
Pricing: $10 for students and $12 for adults at the door.

Why Go: Because pajamas are comfortable, and crafts and stories and fun. To register, head to the Jefferson Township Public Library website.

Where/When:  on Friday, March 4 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Why Go: Because the Pushcart Players Acting Company, a professional theater group, will put on this performance of a classic play.
Pricing: $5 for adults, free for senior citizens and children younger than 18.

Where/When: The Music Den in Butler on Friday, March 4 from 8 to 10 p.m.
Why Go: If your family is musically inclined, why not get together for a family performance? Or just go and enjoy some music?

Where/When: From 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, March 5 at  in Oak Ridge
Why Go: Because kids can enjoy music, stories and games and parent/guardian participation is required, so the whole family can enjoy themselves together.

Where/When: At the  from 10:15 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 5
Why Go: First and second grade readers can practice with a Saluki mix breed named “Snuggles,” a pressure-free 15-minute reading practice session.
Pricing: Free, but each child must be registered by either calling 973-838-3262 or by heading to the Butler Public Library circulation desk.

“Rapunzel - A Brush with Fate!”
Where/When: At 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Pax Amicus Castle Theatre in Budd Lake on Saturday, March 5
Why Go: Because the whole family can enjoy this classic with a modern twist. For more information, see the Pax Amicus website.

Classic Cartoons
Where/When: At the  at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 5
Why Go: Because families can enjoy cartoons on the big screen. This is the only scheduled showing of classic cartoons at the Morris Museum in March.
Pricing: Free with museum admission


Where/When: At 1:00 p.m. at the on Saturday, March 5
Why Go: Because the entire family can enjoy a movie and snacks.

Winter Search Party
Where/When:  from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 5
Why Go: Because families with children age five or older can learn what clues to look for to figure out which animals spent the winter on Pyramid Mountain.

Where/When: From 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 5 at the 
Why Go: This event was founded 21 years ago and will feature games, crafts, raffle prizes, juggling, magic, and singers, as well as dancers performing styles from around the world. The pot luck could also prove to be interesting, as every family is asked to bring either a dish or dessert from their native or ancestral county.

Animal Story Time
Where/When: From 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the  in Chatham on Sunday, March 6
Why Go: Because children ages 2 through 6 can enjoy outdoor story telling mixed with nature, as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

Where/When:  Friday, March 4 at 8 p.m. at the  in Hillsborough
Why Go: It's the final performance of this beloved children's story about a devoted young boy and his treasured toy rabbit.
Pricing:  $12 for all seats

Where/When: 7 p.m. on March 4 and March 5 at the 
Why Go:  The original version of this play includes some adult themes, but you can bring the family as Ridge High School students portray the lives of a group of friends in New York City in the 1990's as they become their own family.  This production is a special school edition and is appropriate for all ages.
Pricing:  $16 for adults or $12 children

Where/When: From 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 5 at the 
Why Go:  You can drop in to enjoy storytime as well as family time.

Where/When:  Saturday, March 5 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at 
Why Go: You can race to this event to spend quality time with your kids.  Children ages 5 to 12 can participate in a hands-on craft to create a  Home Depot Race Car.
Pricing:  Free

Why Go: You'll meet live lizards, snakes, frogs, turtles and even a crocodile.
Pricing:  Free

Where/When:  Saturday, March 5  from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the 
Why Go: To meet and pet dogs from the Somerset Hills Kennel Club and learn how they can become new members of your family.

Where/When:  Saturday, March 5 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Long Hill Community Center in Stirling
Why Go: The family will enjoy a great dinner of spaghetti and meatballs while supporting a great cause.

Why Go: Kids, ages 6 through 10, will enjoy some fresh air, a short hike  and learn about winter arts and music with nature.
