Post Offices Not Closing

Morristown Mayor Tim Dougherty said both Morristown and Convent Station locations no longer on the chopping block.

After months of speculation and worry for those that use the Morristown Post Office about , you can keep bringing your letters and packages.

The Morris Street branch is not closing, for now.

Morristown Mayor Tim Dougherty let everyone know about the decision during Tuesday night's council meeting, noting the Convent Station Post Office, in Morris Township, also was not going to get the axe. In fact, none of the 3,700 post offices around the country on the list of possible closure are closing for now, after major backlash from customers.

That included a petition drive conducted in Morristown over the last several months, which ultimately found its way to Assemblyman Rodney Frelinghuysen, who oversees the 11th Congressional District here.

"The Congressman received many, many petitions," Dougherty said.

Instead of closures, the post office will be scaling back hours of operations at some locations, among other potential initiatives, in an attempt to bridge a revenue shortfall that has been growing wider and wider every year in the age of alternative forms of communication, including email.

Dougherty thanked councilwoman Alison Deeb, resident Linda Carrington "and many others who worked tirelessly to petition for our post office," he said.

"We're not sure what the future holds," the mayor said. "But, right now, our post office is not closing."
