Redeemer to Celebrate Five Years as 'Peace Site' on Sunday

Celebration begins at 10:30 a.m., Sept. 25.

, on South Street, will celebrate its fifth anniversary as a "Peace Site," at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25.

The Church of the Redeemer in Morristown celebrates its fifth anniversary as a Peace Site on Sunday, Sept. 25, with a special liturgy at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Cynthia L. Black, D.D., will preach, and the procession, music, readings and prayers will be specially crafted for the occasion. The service will end with a blessing in front of the church at the peace pole. Several doves, symbolizing peace, will be released
into the air at that time.

After the service, starting at noon, the church will host the Peace Site Coffee House, with refreshments and music. Jim Gartner, a member of the Redeemer choir and a veteran folk singer, will present Songs of Peace. All are invited to both the church service and the coffee house.

Church of the Redeemer is listed by New Jersey Peace Action as a NJ Peace Site. A peace site is a place that commits to peace within its walls, and to working for peace in the larger community and in the world. With a long history of social justice, Redeemer officially joined this effort to reduce violence in all its forms and support actions to promote harmony among all people in 2006. Recent events held at
Redeemer include potlucks for peace, a film series, walks for peace, a domestic violence awareness month, and support of international groups promoting disarmament and unarmed civilian peacekeeping.

The concept of Peace Sites around the world was started by New Jersey’s Lou Kousin over 30 years ago. A member of NJ SANE (predecessor to NJ Peace Action), Kousin had the idea that if every place became a peace site, there would be nowhere left to fight or have wars. The idea caught on and now there are hundreds of peace sites around the world.

The Church of the Redeemer, located at 36 South St., Morristown, is a Christian liberation community in the Episcopal tradition, serving the people of Morristown and beyond for more than 150 years. Sunday services are at 8 a.m. (prayer book) and 10:30 a.m. (inclusive language).
