Survey Could Help Determine Fate of Post Office

USPS questionnaires due by March 15.

Be careful what you say about the –it could help determine whether or not it stays in business.

Residents in the area received a letter this week letting them know about the ongoing study being conducted by the United States Postal Service, to determine whether certain branches should be shut down nationwide in order to cut ongoing annual losses. The "discontinuance feasibility study" sent this week is looking specifically at the Morristown branch on Morris Street. The first announcement, , said 3,700 branches were being examined as part of the effort to streamline and cut costs.

"Customer needs have changed dramatically," the letter states. "Many customers receive and pay their bills online and communicate by email and text message. In addition, many customers demand easier, more convenient access to Postal Service products and services when and where they want them–online, on their smart phones and at the stores they frequent."

If the decision was made to close the Morristown Post Office on Morris Street, the letter states P.O. Box services would be shifted to (in the letter referred to as the "Morristown Main Post Office"), or home delivery could be requested.

"We encourage you to complete and return the enclosed survey in the pre-addressed, postage-paid envelope provided," the letter states. "Your responses along with others received, will be included in the study and considered carefully before any final determination regarding discontinuance is made."

Representatives from the USPS will be available to explain the study and findings from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on March 8 at the Ridgedale Avenue post office. Completed customer surveys can be dropped off then, or sent by mail no later than March 15.
