Two Job Workshops Set For This Week

Community Soup Kitchen will host job preparedness workshop on Tuesday, Sept. 14; the library will present its first of four workshops on Wednesday, Sept. 15.

As if one job workshop might not be beneficial to those looking for career advice in these tough economic times, there will be two workshops in town this week.

The Community Soup Kitchen and Outreach Center will host a job preparedness workshop from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 14, as a precursor to its seventh-annual job fair on Oct. 6. On Wednesday, Sept. 15, The Morristown & Morris Township Library will host "Job Search in Troublesome Times," from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Parish Hall of St. Peter's Episcopal Church. It is the first of four job workshops the library had originally scheduled earlier this year, which were delayed due to the underground explosion that has kept the library's location closed since May.

Lois Nichols, assistant director at the Community Soup Kitchen, said part of the soup kitchen's mission has always been as "an outreach center."

"We help guests gain access to other agencies to address issues they have to deal with," she said, adding several services are offered during the soup kitchen's daily lunch, from mental health services to nurses on hand on Fridays.

The job preparedness workshop is meant for all members of the community, Nichols said, not just those that may utilize the soup kitchen's meal services. There will be two 45-minute presentations at the workshop, on resume writing and job interview skills, and materials will be passed out to participants. Those materials can then be utilized for the job fair on Oct. 6, Nichols said.

Nichols noted this year was particularly exciting because of donations from two sources, Traveller's Insurance and the Rotary Club of Morristown. Those donations have made this month's job preparedness workshop possible, she said. "Success is contingent on reaching as many job seekers as possible," Nichols added.

The Morristown & Morris Township Library will begin a four-part job workshop series on Wednesday with "Job Search in Troublesome Times". Rick Pascal , a professional interview coach and executive recruiter and Bob Richards, a human resources professional with over 25 years experience, will be the presenters.

Three more job workshops will occur starting at 10 a.m. on Sept. 22, 29 and Oct. 6. All of the library job workshops are sponsored by The Friends of the Library.

Heidi Schwab, reference librarian, said she is hoping a lot of people come out for the rescheduled workshops. "We are trying to reach to the community," she said. "We have hired professional career consultants that are highly recommended in their fields."
