This year's Big Greek Festival (http://www.BigGreekFestival.com) marks the 44th annual event hosted by St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church. After months of planning and hundreds of hours invested in preparation, volunteers welcome the thousands of guests who come each year to enjoy a cultural experience that features a characteristic community gathering, complete with traditional Greek food, music and dance.

According to Parish Council President Keith Marin, the event attracts people from far away every year - St. Andrew's extended family and friends, as well as local businesses looking to show their support.

"More than 500 families call our community 'home,' and the commitment of our volunteers to our Big Greek Festival and its success is visible in every aspect," stated Marin. "During their visit with us, the public is immersed in our 'little bit' of Greece, in northern New Jersey. We demonstrate artistic talents in music, dancing and handicrafts made by Greeks."

Cooks and bakers prepare a variety of traditional dishes in the same manner as their mothers and grandmothers did, wrapping delicacies including one of the most well known - a special sweet honey and nut Baklava.

"There is nothing quite like the fragrant smell of fresh Gyros and Souvlaki to entice people to stop and stay awhile, and enjoy the music," added Marin.

The St. Andrew dance troupe that entertains audiences each year is comprised of dedicated youth and the Greek community who seek to preserve the character and ties to Greek culture.

During the festival, guests tour the church and see the craftsmanship and intricate work in colorful icons and wood carvings, and colorful glass windows. "Each element holds deeply religious meaning."
