Thanksgiving Comes Early For Literacy Volunteers

Pot luck supper celebrates extraordinary volunteers as their Tutors of the Year.

More than 150 students, volunteers and friends celebrated Thanksgiving a bit early this year at Literacy Volunteers of Morris County’s Annual Potluck Supper at the Morristown United Methodist Church in Morristown. LVMC provides instruction to adults in reading, writing and English as a Second Language, with students from more than 70 different countries, so the dinner has an international flair, with dishes from around the world in addition to the traditional turkey dinner.

At the dinner, LVMC recognized some extraordinary volunteers as their Tutors of the Year.

  • Nancy Hults Rubin, a professional English as a Second Language teacher, volunteers many hours a week, helping her students understand the nuances of English.
  •  Kathy Bussman has been a volunteer since 1997, and has helped hundreds of students improve their ability to speak English.  Gudrun Johnson Stein, a volunteer since 1998, has helped a couple from China obtain their citizenship and driver’s license.
  • Howard Myers helps adults prepare for the High School Equivalency Diploma, and tutors in math as well as English conversation.

“This dinner is not only about recognizing the incredible work of our more than 350 tutors and 600 student, but it is an important way for our students to practice their English in a supportive environment and celebrate this all American holiday,” said Debbie Leon, LVMC Executive Director.  “And the food is really wonderful!”
