The Mayans Were Right

If you want my take on it, the Mayans weren't predicting the END of the world, but rather the BIRTH of a new one. A world where the paradigm shifts and love and kindness reign.

Today is December 21st, 2012. According to Mayan predictions, the world was supposed to end this morning. If you want my take on it, the Mayans weren't predicting the END of the world, but rather the BIRTH of a new one. A world where the paradigm shifts and love and kindness reign.

It's no wonder that this date falls on the winter solstice. Where the darkness gives over to the light. There is too much darkness and evil in this world.  And I think we are fed up.  It's time to change. It's time to shine more light on each other. Because when we can truly SEE another then we are less likely to hurt them and more likely to hold them up.

Here's the secret -  we hold the power to shift.  We have the ability to rise up out of tragedy like Newtown and CHANGE this world. It doesn't happen by a "miracle", it's not going to happen through legislation in Washington, it's not going to happen in your world unless YOU MAKE IT HAPPEN. One of the most precious quotes to me by my teacher, Douglas Brooks, "You are not the captor of your constructs, you are the creator of them." You choose to shape the world around you. And if this paradigm is going to shift from dark to light, from violence to kindness it is because we, as individuals, will affect that change, person by person, act by act.

Sounds easy? It's not. You can't just sit there WISHING things were different. You have to ACT differently yourself.

Today is a new world.  Take to heart the movement of committing "random acts of kindness" and do it. Just once. See how you can help another, even in a small way today, and the feeling of warmth will arrive ten-fold in your heart. I promise you, you'll be hooked and it will become habit.  And you will change the world.

The birthing of a world of kindness doesn't come in grand measures. It comes in small steps. One small act at a time. So today, commit yourself to doing your part to be an agent of change the world. Be a little more patient, be a little more kind, be a little more generous. And bring this world from darkness into light.

I was up in Newtown this week.  I saw first hand how ugly the tattoo of violence looks on a quiet, beautiful community. But I also saw this...that there is only one thing that can destroy hate and violence and that is love and kindness. It is our best arsenal against evil. And it triumphs every time. Shine a light into the darkness and who wins?

This world will always be a container for darkness and hate and violence. And I'm not suggesting that these can be eradicated. Not at all. I'm just saying that we can shift the balance. We can choose and create the world we live in. It begins within the two square feet you are standing in. So take responsibility for the state of this world. We are all a part of it. Stand in your powerful ability to make it what you wish it to be.

As far as I'm concerned, the Mayans were absolutely on the mark!  The world  really DID end today.  And as REM sings "it's the end of the world as we know it...and I feel fine."
