Former Morristown Firefighter Dies

Michael Heaney passed away on Nov. 9 at 26 years old.

Morristown resident, volunteer firefighter, swim captain and skydiver Michael Heaney passed away Nov. 9 due to complications stemming from a bicycle accident in April of 2012.

He was 26.

Heaney lived in Voorhees as a youth and after his college graduation, he moved to Morristown. Heaney was a 2005 graduate of Bishop Eustace Prep School and a 2009 graduate of The College of New Jersey.
 
A nationally ranked swimmer, Heaney was the captain of both his high school and college teams. He began his swimming career at Downs Farm Swim Club in Cherry Hill and Heaney was also a member of the Camden County YMCA.  

In addition to swimming, Michael participated in numerous endurance races such as tough mudders and triathlons and was a certified skydiver. Heaney was also a volunteer fireman in Morristown. 

Despite his age, Heaney was well-traveled and he had studied overseas in Spain. Prior to his accident, Heaney was a product manager at Verizon Wireless in Basking Ridge.  In addition to his many accomplishments, he will be remembered for his generosity and zest for life.

Heaney is the beloved son of Sheila Heaney (nee Meinken) and the late, Donald Heaney as well as the devoted brother of John Paul and Kevin Heaney. Heaney is also lovingly survived by his uncle John Meinken and family, his grandmother, Kathryn Meinken as well as too many friends to mention by name.         

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing Wednesday morning from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Healey Funeral Home located at 1816 Berlin Road (Route 561), Cherry Hill where his Funeral Service will take place at the conclusion of his viewing. 
Interment following at Berlin Cemetery, Berlin, NJ.          

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey at 825 Georges Road, 2nd floor, North Brunswick, NJ 08902.
