Bears, 'Mountain Lion' Spotted in Area

Police have received numerous calls about a mother bear and her cubs since Saturday; a Dorothy Drive resident said Wednesday she believed there was a mountain lion on her street.

They may look cute and cuddly, but a wild animal spotting is not an excuse to pull out your camera phone.

Morris Township Police say a mother bear and her cubs have been spotted by numerous town and township residents since last weekend, in the area of Martin Luther King Avenue over the weekend and most recently in the Lake Road section of Patriots Path.

And, township police were on the lookout Wednesday afternoon when a Dorothy Drive resident called in a report of what she believed to be a mountain lion.

"We checked the area, but we didn't see any, and no signs," Morris Township Police Capt. Rich Ferrone said. A number of neighbors also said they had not seen or heard anything.

"Sightings of mountain lions have been on the rise throughout North Jersey over the past few years," Ferrone said. "Like many wild animals, mountain lions generally avoid contact with humans. The food source for mountain lions mainly consists of deer, which there are plenty of in the area."

The police are in contact with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, to find out if a mountain lion would even venture into this area. "Could it be something else? What should our concerns be," Ferrone said.

Either way, and whether it's a bear or some kind of cat, he told residents not to approach the animals in either case. While bear sightings are common in this area—and this mother bear and her cubs appear to be heading back into the woods—Ferrone said to call the police as soon as possible if anyone sees the so-called mountain lion.

And, if you see the bears, "make sure you stay from the cubs," Ferrone said. "They may be cute, cuddly cubs, but mother bear won't take kindly."

My husband saw the mountain lion on Hillcrest yesterday. It was not a bobcat, fox or coyote, it was a large tan cat with a long tail. Apparently the state Divison of Fish & Wildlife needs a picture as proof, so keep your cameras ready. They suggested that we bait with roadkill and get some trail cameras to get pictures. Not something I would ever attempt to do, pick up roadkill and head into the woods where I know a mountain lion is hanging around. The police say that a number of neighbors did not see or hear anything, they most likely did not talk to the other people that we know that saw the cat. Three people in 5 days with the same description one of them being my husband, is what prompted me to contact the police and alert my neighbors as well as Hillcrest School. & Villa Walsh. With Halloween nearing this large wild cat needs to be caught and relocated. Please call the police if you see anything and keep a close watch on your kids and pets when they are outside.

It ran from the school side at 126 Hillcrest at about 4:00 on Wed. and and it went down through the yard towards Midland. On Fri. afternoon it was behind 6 Dorothy Dr and on Sat morning it was behind 61 Fairmount. The neighbor on Sat. even got her binouculars out to get a good look and she saw a large cat with a long tail. When I told my next door neigbor on Sun. she said her husband saw it on Friday behind their house in Jones Woods.

We'll see... the Eastern Mountain Lion has been extinct east of the Mississippi River since the 1930s, according to the National Wildlife Service...but migration due to climate and habitat change could be possible

People do keep wild animals, including big cats, illegally. This could easily be an escaped "pet."

My wife and I heard a LARGE cat attacking small animals near our house in Basking Ridge about 7 years ago. I am sure it was a mountain lion, but it was on a dark side of the house and we could not see it (you should have heard it, I was too afraid to venture out to see it). At the time, I thought I was nuts, but since then I have read about many other sightings in NJ.

I Don't Know where Dorothy Drive is, But When I Was over my Neice's house in Lake Parsippany 3 Weeks ago , a Total Residential Area, We Both Saw a LARGE Cat We thought it was a Bob-Cat, And my Dad in montville Also has been seeing Bob-cats. He told me they have been around since we owned the house, in the 1970s, So, I Assumed that was What I Saw, in Lake Parsippany, a Bob-Cat (Very LARGE cat, and FAST)!!!!

Welcome tothe WILDLANDS! This is just the beginning.....buckle your seat belt but heed my words and fully understand what WE all are in for! This is part of the Biodiversity section of AGENDA 21/ SUSTAINABILITY United Nation initiative that is occurring all over the United States. The WILDLANDS map....look it up....promotes utilizing about 85% of the land I the U.S. to enable ANIMMALS to run freely. Corridors or buffer zones will assist the animals to move more easily from one tea to another. Over 500 Dams have already been destroyed.....because Water should not be restrained according to the MISFITS that are proposing this agenda! You might ask how could this occur? Isn't that dangerous? Well it is the HUMANS that will be driven from their homes and herded into "cages" in small stack and pack housing unit highrise tenements! It is the humans that will be prevented from entering the animal paradises. This is brought to you by the United Nations and and elite group of demented individuals who want a one world government with themselves possessing the power at the top. CON'T

The New Jersey State plan, which mirrors AGENDA 21 is continued to be brought to you by the Obama Administration. Foreclosures of private property were PURPOSELY created by Fannie and Freddie with pressure applied to banks to give mortgages to people who did not qualify for them. Make a crisis...then provide a pre-conceived answer is what OBAMA does.Regulations on WATER! ELECTRICITY! SEWERS Etc are going to help force people into the URBAN HUBS that are being readied for you with taxpayer dollars. Private single family ownership is no longer sustainable according to these creeps. The wild animals roaming around will give you an extra push toward city life...NO CARS ALLOWED! YOU will be entrapped in a cell existence that is if you are allowed to live. Remember these people also want to reduce the population of the world to around 1 million people. OBAMACARE w/ DEATH PANELS! Genetic modified food...shortages of food. Just another way to decrease populations. So when you start noticing bears, serval cats, Cougars, wolves, and other exotic creatures running freely realize that this future is planned for you by the United Nations, the OBAMA administration and a group of megalomaniacs and they have made you pawns in their game out chess. Stand up and fight. Throw these bums out of office, defund the United Nations, get rid of the Socialists, Marxists, and the Communists that have infiltrated our government and wish the destruction of our country. LET'S TAKE OUR OUNTRY BACK!

Jesse Ignorance is bliss. Obviously you do not know what is happening. What town do you live in? You might want to check if your town belongs to ICLEI ( International Council of Local Enviormental Initiative) and also Sustainable New Jersey.

Hey Patriot, although I might agree with some of your views, what the heck do they have to do with a mtn lion and bear cubs in Morris Twp??! Omg....
Patriot October 19, 2012 at 01:26 AM
My point is that one should get used to this as these sightings and more of wolves, bobcats, mountain lions, cougars, etc. will just become commonplace with the WILDLANDS portion of Agenda 21 and will be another factor to "help" direct people to the supposed safety of the cluster city hubs being prepared for the future. Now sightings are happening because of seasons changing, hunting periods, high activity, destruction or changes of natural habitats, quests for food, searches for water sources as dams and waterways have been altered, etc. This is merely the beginning phase. Since the Federal government now owns 50% of the U.S. land with their goal of 85% and the plan is to let animal roam freely, MORE regulations, increases in taxes, increases in costs of electricity and gas, control of water, food and also the limitations of sewerlines and hookups will become major factors which will cause the exodus from farms and the suburbs. GOAL: Forcing people into cities or urban hubs. Suburbs are considered SPRAWL and are unsustainable according to the United Nations and people behind AGENDA 21.
