Bird Knocks Out Power to Over 2,400 Customers

A bird flew into utility wires Sunday morning near the intersection of Sussex and Speedwell avenues in Morristown, causing 2,432 customers in Morristown and Morris Township to lose power, the electric company said.

Peter Johner, area manager of external affairs for Jersey Central Power & Light, said power was restored for all customers by 11:30 a.m.

The outage first was reported at 8:18 a.m., he said.

The outage occurred when the bird flew into a three-phase spacer cable in front of 11 Sussex Ave., Johner said.

Update: There were 445 customers still without power around 10:30 a.m. At the height of the outage, more than 2,400 customers were without power. The headline and story were updated to reflect that.
