While waiting for the ambulance, two of the victim's friends told police three white males—all between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-10, wearing pea-coats and at least one with short, dark hair—committed the assault, according to the report. The witnesses said one of the men slammed the victim's head into the sidewalk, according to the report.

The victim's friends said the three men fled toward DeHart Street, which police investigated with negative results.
