Cops: Woman Forged Check, Tried to Steal Thousands

The following arrest information was supplied by the Morristown Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Morristown Police say a Newark woman had withdrawn $4,200 from her bank account using a fraudulent check, and was caught when trying to get even more money.

On the afternoon of Oct. 27, police responded to a call from the on North Park Place regarding a fraudulent check, according to an incident report. Bank employees told police the woman—who had been using a false name but was later identified as Chancine Carty, 21, of Newark—had deposited a check for $8,500 that employees later discovered was stolen and forged, according to the report.

At 9:15 that morning, Carty went into the North Park Place branch and withdrew $4,200 from the account using her debit card, according to the incident report. She then attempted to withdraw another $3,500 from a Summit branch but was denied, it states.

At 1:50 p.m., Carty returned to the Morristown branch and attempted to withdraw $4,000, again using the debit card, but bank employees told her they needed to get the money from the vault and contacted police, according to the report.

When police spoke with Carty, she could not produce any identification but showed them the debit card she had used to withdraw the money, according to the report. Carty said she had gotten the deposited money from work she had performed the week before, it states.

After police explained the severity of the possible charges she could face, Carty provided her real name to police, and said a girl she had recently met asked her to do some favors and withdraw some money from her account, according to the report. When police asked if she still had the $4,200 she had withdrawn earlier in the day, Carty said she had most of it, but had spent some of it on "family things," according to the report.

Carty was charged with obstructing the adminstration of law, identify theft, two counts of fraudulent use of a credit card and two counts of forgery. Bail was set at $20,000, with a positive proof of government identification stipulation, according to the report.
