HVAC Fire Causes Courthouse Closure

Roads have now been reopened.

An overheated HVAC motor caught fire in the attic of the Morris County Courthouse Tuesday morning, causing an evacuation and closure of over an hour, according to David Barter, Morris County's assistant fire marshall.

The latest situation did not quite the same response, with only fire crews from Morristown at the scene, according to Barter.

The latest fire occurred in the historic section of the courthouse, causing an evacuation at about 9:45 a.m. The Morristown Police Department reported "fire department activity at the Morris County Court House," according to an alert issued just after 10 a.m. via the Nixle.com alert service. The building reopened at 11 a.m.

Ann Street between Schuyler Place and Western Avenue was closed for a time, as was a section of Western Avenue. These streets have been reopened.

According to Barter, the HVAC unit should be replaced by the end of the day. A residual smell from the fire was expected to be blown out of the courthouse today. By tomorrow, he said, "You probably won't know it happened."
