Increased Twp. Police Presence at School Rest of Week

Police Department working with Morris School District and other schools following Friday school shooting in Connecticut.

In light of the school shooting in Connecticut on Friday, the Morris Township Police Department says it will be working more with both the Morris School District and Township private schools to ensure their safety.

"The entire Morris Township Police Department is greatly saddened by the tragic school shooting that occurred early Friday morning in Newtown, Conn.," according to the release. "This unthinkable act targeted the safety and innocence of 26 lives at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. We want to reassure our community that together with our public and private schools we are committed to providing a safe learning environment for your children."

The release notes the police department has historically worked with all schools and districts operating in the township. "In a coordinated effort, we regularly evaluate our safety plans and strategies," the release noted. "As a result of this tragic incident, the Morris Township Police Department has maintained contact with our local school principals or administrators to ensure there are no issues or concerns as students and staff return to the classroom. For the rest of the week, Morris Township Police Officers are directed to provide additional patrols to all of our schools.

"Until some normalcy is returned to the classroom setting, we will do our best to maintain a visible presence during both drop-off and pick-up," the release concludes. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and first responders in Connecticut and all who are affected by this unspeakable act."
