Man Accused of Chicago Decapitation Indicted for Alleged Threats in Morristown

Milton Miranda-Portillo is charged with aggravated assault and threatening to kill a woman in Morristown and a fraud offense in Denville.

A man accused of a grisly Chicago slaying was indicted Tuesday in Morris County for allegedly threatening a Morristown woman.

Milton Miranda-Portillo was indicted by a Morris County grand jury Tuesday, one day before he's scheduled to have a hearing in Superior Court to determine if he will be extradited to Chicago, as Illinois law enforcement officials request.

Miranda-Portillo, who has listed ages of 22 and 28 and who has used various names, according to NJ.com, is being sought for the May 21 decapitation of Jose Reyes. Miranda-Portillo allegedly killed Reyes because the man showed interest in his girlfriend.

The Morris County grand jury's indictment dealt specifically with allegations that Miranda-Portillo made terroristic threats in a June 12 Morristown incident in which he is accused of threatening "to kill" a woman “with the purpose to put said victim in imminent fear of death by causing said victim to believe the immediacy of the threat and the likelihood that it will be carried out.”

The defendant also faces charges of aggravated assault on a woman in Morristown on June 7 and in an October identity theft case where he is alleged to have committed forgery, the article said.

Miranda-Portillo was linked to the Chicago slaying after he was arrested in the identity theft incident.

Police in Chicago said Reyes had shown an interest in Miranda-Portillo’s girlfriend, Daisy Gutierrez. Reyes knew Gutierrez because he is the brother of her former boyfriend.
