A Morristown resident received three years in prison for severely beating a man who allegedly insulted his mother outside the town's American Legion Hall last January, the Daily Record reported. The sentence was handed down Friday at Morris County Superior Court.
Bryan S. Mills, 38, admitted he was drunk at the time of the incident when he pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated assault, the article said. Mills allegedly suffered major injuries including a collapsed lung and a fractured skull but has since recovered fully, the article said. He told the court that alcohol is an ongoing problem for him.
Judge Mary Gibbons Whipple told Mills that being drunk did not mitigate the harm he did or the nature of his behavior. While the county prosecutor asked for the man to receive a four-year prison term, the judge opted to give him three years, and told Mills he must address his alcoholism, the article continued.
